“Best hard shell crabs”
Reviewed December 24, 2013

I come in from Texas twice a year to have the hard shell crabs. They were so good this trip, I'm going twice in one week! Best flavor and size anywhere I've found! A must for crab lovers!

“Ham and Cheese Club Sandwich on Rye w/a little mayo”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

If you are truly hungry, get the ham and cheese club sandwich. It includes lettuce, tomato and bacon, and is one huge sandwich, cut into quarters. The selection includes a small bag of Utz chips. It is a good value for the cost, and tastes delicious. Usually we can only eat 1/2 of the sandwich, and save the rest for another meal, or share one sandwich between two adults. If you need it packaged differently, they will do that upon request. We have ordered it as a carryout to take to BWI airport in the past, and they have removed the toothpicks and wrapped each quarter in foil for us. Of course, some of the other passengers would have liked to kill us to get the sandwiches.

“No frills local place - good steamed foods but temper expectations”
Reviewed July 6, 2013

Several family members and I went to Big Mike’s for dinner this evening. The reviews were mixed.
This is a quaint, nofrills neighbourhood place that is clearly geared toward carry-out but they do have a few tables inside and a few tables on the patio outside, for a sit-down meal.

We at inside but we probably should have eaten outside as the heat from the steamers definitely elevated the temperature inside.

It was loud inside, mostly due to the steady stream of regulars coming in to get steamed crabs. They must be good because people were buying multiple dozens and even a few bushels – they sure smelled good.

Our server was great. She promptly took our orders and kept the refills coming. She gets an A which was a relief after our recent poor service at Bateman’s. Speaking of Bateman’s, I was told by two family members that the crab pretzel at Big Mike’s was far superior to the crab pretzel at Batemans.

Batemans pretzel is bigger but Big Mikes definitely looked better (it was plump, full of crab and was not burned unlike Batemans which burned our crab pretzels- again).

The steamed clams were great as were the steamed crab legs. I was told by my son that the burger was so-so (nothing special – frozen patty not fresh). He ate it. Same for the fried shrimp – nothing special. One family member gave them a thumbs-down and one so-so. I also tried the crab balls. They would have been good if they had been broiled not fried (they wouldn’t broil them). The fryer overcooked them badly. The cream of crab soup looked good but the Maryland style crab soup was very watery, lacked ingredients and flavour. It took several packs of crackers and a ton of pepper to make it palatable.

Prices were about average on the steamed foods but a little high on things like the crab balls (just under $9 for something that was barely edible)

One thing – the parking lot is kinda small but there is street parking. Overall, this appears to be a solid carryout place but it's really not a great place for a sit down meal (unless you are going for the steamed food and you eat it outside) but you could do worse.

The excellent service we had definitely made up for some of the issues we had with the fried foods.

I will definitely go back to try their carry-out steamed crabs because that many people coming in and out buying them is a very good sign.

“Feels like the beach!”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

Big Mike's is tucked away in Hanover but it is definitely a popular spot because it is always filled when we arrive and people are streaming in & out for take-out seafood. It is rather small but the locals like it that way--a cozy neighborhood restaurant. There are plenty of umbrella-covered picnic tables outside on the deck; however, thus giving the beachy feel. The weather just needs to cooperate. The cream of crab soup is especially delicious. The seafood "bucket" is a great value and very tasty, as are the crabcakes. The restaurant is BYOB: beer, wine, whatever! The wait staff seem to know their customers and are quite friendly and helpful. Go into town to shop at Clark's warehouse and then get dinner at Big Mike's! You won't be disappointed. Be sure to call ahead, however, to be sure they are still stocked up on crabs and/or crab legs, especially on a special day (i.e. Father's Day).
