If you are in the Gouldsboro, PA this is just about the best you can find for local flavor, tavern atmosphere, reasonable prices and a nice crowd.
We've been coming here for a number of years as it's the closest restaurant to the Big Bass Lake area and serves alcohol. It's split into a large and lively bar area and a quieter dining area. They added an outdoor deck about two years ago.
The bar area is full of local patrons and there is always a laughing and bantering amongst them. The crowd is mostly mid-age adults and older so no young people hanging out. People greet each other like long lost friends and the TVs keep they engaged with the latest sports broadcast. The dining area has young families and older couples enjoying the Saturday night prime rib. One evening a patron at the bar who had one too many and started acting out at the bar and was quickly told to keep it down there were families around. So the staff knows and understands what is appropriate and willing to take action!
The menu is mostly tavern food - meat, potatoes, fried food, soup and maybe a fish entree on the menu. It is not a place for non-meat eaters although I noted a veggie burger on the daily special menu. Since we are basically non beef eaters, and we shy away from fried food, we find the menu limiting. You can always order the chicken burger which is really chicken breast or a pizza. We went there around the holidays and they actually had some Italian food on the menu (eggplant parm, pasta, etc.), but found they really haven't followed up in this category.
The drinks are generous, the staff is pleasant and efficient, Dutch will stop by now and then to see if you are doing okay. I don't think you could ask for more!
