“Allegheny River Trail - Emlenton to Oil City”

Allegheny River Trail
Reviewed August 10, 2014

This is one of the best rail to trail bike paths in Western Pennsylvania. It is paved all the way from Emlenton Pa, (right off Interstate 80) to Oil City. I believe it's a little over 30 miles. It follows the Allegheny River the entire way except for 1/2 mile somewhere in the middle where they were unable to get the right of way. You have to make a short detour through a small neighborhood, then you're back on the trail. There are also two tunnels with no lighting inside. They can be creepy, but they're fun to navigate. There's lots of wild life to see and I've even seen a Bald Eagle or two. It's the only place I've ever seen bluebirds flitting about. Make sure your take liquids and some energy snacks. There are no places to eat or drink between Emlenton and Franklin, which is the longest section of the trail so far. Grab a great weather day and set out for a fun ride.

We live near the trail and take every opportunity we can get to enjoy this paved trail. From walks, to bikes, to rollerblades... miles and miles of trail along the Allegheny River to enjoy. We've seen eagles, deer, porcupines, snapping turtles (and other turtles), and snakes along the trail. Just remember to NEVER ride your bike over a stick - it could very likely be a snake.

Paved trails with great views of the Allegheny River. Starting point was at Franklin. Saw lots of wild life as we rode early in the morning.

Kennerdell Tunnel has a curve, so bring a light. Nearly the whole trail is paved and the scenery is wonderful. Franklin is turning into a up and coming trail town with a great old victorian main street easily reachable via bike from the trail. The Sandy Creek Trail crosses this one which has one of my favorite five mile stretches including Belmar Bridge over the Allegheny River, several other converted bridges that on their own could be considered worth the trip and its own shorter tunnel. These trails plus the Samuel Justus trail and Oil Creek State Park form over sixty miles of an emerging Pittsburgh to Erie rail trail system.
