“Good food. A little crowded.”

A popular place to eat with locals. The tables are tightly packed for busy lunch times.

“Very Good Casual Restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 12, 2012

It is clear that this eclectic restaurant aspires to be great, however, it is known more for its great breakfasts and lunches than dinner. They try to be inventive with their cuisine as it is not a basic meat and potatos kind of place. Everything on the dinner menu sounds great, unique and flavorful, and for the most part they deliver what is promised. I had the pomegranate glazed rack of lamb with roasted vegetables and goat cheese orzo and carmelized cauliflower. This was part of a prix fix meal that included appetizer, entree, a mixed dessert plate (4 items) and a glass of wine for $25 (a value steal). The portions were ample without being grossly huge. The lobster mac and cheese appetizer was a bit bland and a disappointment, but there were other interesting choices to choose from. The flavors and presentation were good, but just not quite what you would expect from a gourmet restaurant in downtown Philly (hence 4 stars vs. 5). The atmosphere was an old quaint house. They used cloth tablecloths and napkins at tables (no booths), but the glass display case of cakes made the atmosphere more of a cross of cafe/diner and fine dining. I would most certainly return as the meal was enjoyable and a real value pricewise, but think of it as a nice casual dining destination and not a place to celebrate a major event.

“Good Food but Expensive”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 3, 2012

We visited Zakes Cakes and Cafe last week and the food was very good but I thought it was expensive. The service was very good also. My only complaint was that it was a little pricey. Even thought it was a BYOB, I was surprised when the bill came.

The food is good, the atmosphere nice, but it is overpriced for what you get.

“Zakes - Great Breakfast and Lunch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 9, 2012

Zakes makes all their baked goods on sight and serves up wonderful breakfast and lunch fare in an old inn type location. If you have a sweet tooth watch out, they really have amazing desserts and everything is fresh including the fruit.
