At Waldameer Park and Water World, a family-owned amusement park at the entrance to Presque Isle State Park in Erie, PA, you will find something to do for everyone in your family. The owner adds a new ride almost every year as he cares about his customers, instead of keeping the profits to himself. The new roller coaster has been highly rated by coaster enthusiasts, the ferris wheel offers an unrivaled view of Lake Erie, and the water park portion has enough rides and pools to keep your family busy all day long. The train ride is popular with the younger kids, as are the kiddieland rides in the park, and the kiddie pools in the waterworld. Rainbow Gardens is a large homey ballroom type room that can be rented for many kinds of activities. There are picnic shelters, food booths and the usual game booths as well. During the summer, Waldameer is an affordable, must-go-to attraction for locals and visitors alike.

As an amusement park fan who grew up in the Cleveland area, I was at one time spoiled by the fact that we were relatively close to 3 great theme parks- Cedar Point, Geauga Lake and Sea World of Ohio. Unfortunately, two of those three parks no longer exist, which is a shame as Geauga Lake was a great “family park” that was close by and had a nice collection of attractions that everyone could enjoy. And while I enjoy Cedar Point, the huge crowds and hectic atmosphere often make me wish we had an alternative in the area. Enter Waldameer in Erie, Pennsylvania. I have been visiting this family-owned park for over 20 years and each year it continues to expand, evolve and improve.

Offering free parking and free general admission, Waldameer sits on the shores of Lake Erie, right near the entrance to Presque Isle State Park. If you wish to ride the rides, you can purchase a ride-all-day pass for approximately $27 or can purchase ride points that are placed on what the park calls a “Wally Card”. Each major ride ranges from 3-4.5 points ($3-$4.50) while kiddie rides are 1-2 points ($1-$2). It’s nice that families can enjoy the park without having to spend a small fortune.

As far as rides go, Waldameer has a great selection of old and new thrills. The main attraction is the amazing Ravine Flyer 2 wooden coaster. Built in 2008, this coaster features numerous moments of airtime as it crosses over Peninsula Drive twice and features a 90-degree banked turn and many other hills along the course. The speed is intense as the ride never lets up until you hit the brakes 90 seconds later. A definite must-ride for any coaster fanatic. Other highlights include the Steel Dragon spinning roller coaster, Thunder River log flume, a long train ride around the park, a classic junior coaster called the Comet, the X-Scream drop tower, a 100-foot tall Giant Ferris Wheel which offers gorgeous views of the lakefront, and two classic dark attractions- the Whacky Shack dark ride and Pirate’s Cove walk-through funhouse. There are several other spinning rides and a handful of kiddie rides. New for 2013 will be a Music Express ride, which I rode on preview day in December and looks to be another big hit for Waldameer.

Waldameer also has a small waterpark called Water World, which is included in your ride-all-day pass, or can be purchased as a stand-alone ticket for a lesser price. The waterpark is showing its age, however 2014 will see the addition of a wave pool and children’s water play area. The waterpark is very popular still, and can get quite crowded on busy days.

Waldameer’s food selection is decent and the quality of the food is average at best, but it is better than the gruel served at many of the large parks such as Six Flags. There is also a trio of live shows presented on a small stage near the Whacky Shack several times daily. The quality of these shows is quite bad, but I give the kids starring in them credit for giving it their all.

If there anything negative I can say about Waldameer, it’s the new “Cashless” policy that went into effect in 2012. Cash is not accepted at any location other than the admission booths, so if you want food or souvenirs, or want to play one of the midway games, you’ll need a credit or debit card, or load up on “Wally Points”. I understand the business reasoning behind it, but I know there are many people who would rather spend cash than whip out a credit card for everything… or end up not spending all of the money they put on a Wally Card (Wally cards never expire, but any money put on them is non-refundable). My other gripe is that I do not recommend visiting on a Saturday evening. I have seen some rather obnoxious crowds ruining the family atmosphere on Saturday nights and it makes for a less enjoyable visit to the park.

I do highly recommend Waldameer for anyone who enjoys amusement parks, and especially recommend it to families looking to have a fun day out on a budget. You won’t feel like you are being gouged at every turn like at some of the big-name theme parks and there really is something for everyone to enjoy.

Waldameer offers lots to do, even if you or your kids aren't big riders. The water park is always a hit with the family. It's nice to be able to get into the park without admission for all and the option to ride with tickets.

This park has a nitch of it's own. It's not a huge place like Cedar Point, but definately has lots to keep a family busy. The water park is great. Every year there is a new ride added. Very well worth the admission price.

Great little amusement park that's one of the oldest in the country, but very well maintained and still growing. This park offers rides and games for all ages, toddler to adult, with a great selection of roller coasters and lines that don't keep you waiting all day. There is a very family oriented atmosphere here, with smoking limited to designated areas and no liquor sales. Admission is free, with an option of paying per ride, getting a ride all day bracelet, or season tickets that allow you to attend the park and ride all you want to all season for a very low fee! I'm a coaster freak and love this park. Make sure to try the elephant ears too. They are delicious (and terrible for you!).
