We went for the first time and did the Mt. Tammany trail and loved it. We found two letterboxes (atlasquest.com) and had a great hike. I highly recommend doing the loop using both the blue and red trails as they are both different and pretty.

Maybe you'll never hike the whole AT, but DWG National Recreation Area lets you hit a little bit of it. Well-marked trails, gorgeous streams and waterfalls, camping, Sunfish Pond at the top, a great outing. Summer weekends can be crowded, so shoot for spring & fall or mid-week for the most peace. Bring water, food, and camera. Parking off Route 80, just before crossing from NJ into PA.

Even in winter it was very nice. Trails are closed in January tho. There are two great hikes- Mt Tamaney and Mt Minsi (West of the river. You have to do them both!

We took a week-end getaway the 1st weekend in January to do a little site seeing and walk to some waterfalls But little did we know a lot of the sites to see close after the first snow fall. So I guess will have to come back in the summer to see what we missed.
