“The "Best" Place for a Railfan!”
Reviewed June 30, 2013

The Station Inn was a place that my parents took me as a surprise after the school year. I am a big time RAILFAN and this was a dream come true! I thought I died and went to Heaven! The place was clean and well kept. The Inn is over a century old and the owners have done a great job keeping it up. There is no air conditioning, but even in the summer, the nights are cool enough that my Dad and I had to buy sweatshirts! I have never seen so many trains go by in one single spot.
The food was delicious, even for a picky eater like me. Tom & Sandy were great hosts. Tom even let me blow the train horn that was on the porch. It was great to see and meet other railfans from Canada and had great time there.
I Will be back sometime in the future.

My husband would be a permanent guest if he could! Take a big porch with rocking chairs and put it next to a busy train tract and call it the Station Inn or HEAVEN for a rail fan! Wonderful spot! Rooms are simple but clean. Breakfasts are amazing!

Thank you again Tom & Sandy for hosting us. Such a great place to really get away and enjoy the trains like you cannot anywhere else! From your bedroom, the front porch and all the special spots nearby. Horseshoe Curve is always a must. Breakfast is YUM!
If you are a railfan...do not miss this trip.

Three of us stayed here last weekend. What a wonderful experience at The Station Inn. Great people, awesome accommodations, and good food. The room was well kept, clean, fresh paint, stocked with numerous towels, soaps, coffee and bedding. I was pleasantly surprised with the up keep of the Inn for being over a century old! The staff at the Inn is friendly and wonderful to talk to. Sitting on the front porch and watching the trains go by is a great way to spend the days and nights along with talking among the other rail fans. There are numerous rail fan areas close by including Horseshoe Curve and Altoona. Highly recommended B&B for anyone including non-rail fans that might be in the area. We will be heading back to Cresson for another stay at The Station Inn, You will not be disappointed!!

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a room on the track side for an all night view! Remember, trains are loud and mi...

We'd read about Station Inn years ago and finally made the trip - and we will go back. We probably don't qualify as "railfanners" - don't have our own scanner, don't want to drive from tunnel to tunnel to catch the next great photo, don't own an engineer cap - but we like trains and like watching them, and this is the place to be. Our comfortable, warm room faced the nearby tracks, so, even though it was waaaay too cold to sit on the porch during our recent weekend stay, we could cozy up in our chairs or on the comfy bed and watch and listen to our heart's content. The room comes with plenty of towels, a dandy Keurig beverage machine, a sink, good lights for reading at night. Tom, the warm and welcoming inn keeper, let us borrow a scanner, so we could hear the chatter of trainmen up and down the line. Over two fresh, generous and delicious breakfasts, we had long and lively talks with Tom and other guests, and not just about trains. We took some drives to nearby sites - the always amazing Horseshoe Curve, where we watched three long freight trains make the curve simultaneously, and the Gallitzen Tunnel, and the interesting and well-done exhibits and film at Allegheny Portage Railroad historic site. But mostly we enjoyed the Inn. We read. We napped. We played Scrabble. We took walks in the snow. We had a couple of decent meals in town, thanks to Tom's recommendations. We read and napped some more. And always with the beautiful music of trains in the background, one every ten minutes or so, and all in their own ways fascinating and fun. Can't wait to go back!

Do you like trains? Do you like sitting on your front porch to watch trains? Wait, you don't have a front porch overlooking a busy, three-track mountain mainline? Luckily for you, The Station Inn has all that, and more. Cozy, no-frills rooms, great breakfast, lovely staff, and a view of the tracks that you're not going to find anywhere else. If trains are your thing, or even if they're not, the Station Inn is worth checking out!

The Station Inn has been drawing rail enthusiasts like a moth to a flame ever since it opened as a bed and breakfast in 1993. What makes the inn a magnet for what has became an international fraternity of train buffs is the fact that it sits 150 feet off Conrail’s triple track, Pittsburgh line, which can see as many as 60 trains go by each 24 hours.
There are a lot of places in the nation where rail fans can indulge in their pursuit of watching trains, but they don’t offer the full range and variety of trains as the Station Inn.
From the front porch, guests can point their cameras in the direction of the tracks in the hope of capturing images of mixed merchandise freights, auto racks, coal drags, ore trains, double stacks and helper engines. Once a day, in both directions, Amtrak’s Pittsburgh to New York line clickety-clacks by, and even more exotic is the annual run of the circus train.
The inn started out in 1866 as the Callan House, a mid-level getaway for vacationing Pittsburghers. Later it became a stopover for traveling salesmen, and in the 1920s, it accommodated crews servicing the rail lines.
Don’t expect luxury at this rail-focused mecca which eschews telephones, TVs and air conditioning in the inn’s seven comfortably furnished, railroad -themed bedrooms, many of which overlook the mainline.
Because the inn is located 2,014-feet above sea level, the temperature cools down comfortably come evening, and, for those addicted to TV as well as trains, a set in the Common Room offers a chance to catch your favorite shows.
As might be expected, the owner stocks a multitude of rail books, magazines and DVDs for his guests to enjoy. He also gives directions to the area’s best train photo vantage points such as the Cassandra Overlook (rated the best by those in the know), the bridge at nearby Lily and Carney Crossing.
Icing on the cake, the inn is only three miles from the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, six miles from the Gallitzen rail tunnels, 10 miles from the Horseshoe Curve and 15 miles from the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum.

Room Tip: Look for a room overlooking the tracks.
