“Nice stop”
Reviewed April 20, 2014

We stopped here and spent some time perusing the museum. It's very nice and informative about out early railroad worked. There was still snow on the ground (and hence the boardwalk was closed) otherwise we definitely would have walked to see the grounds. Would make another stop here if in the area.

“A pleasant surprise”
Reviewed December 29, 2013 via mobile

My family and I love going to national parks. On trip through western pa, we stopped at this park to break up the drive. What a surprise! The 20 minute video was clear and concise demonstrating the marvel of this historic site. This is a great 90 minute stop and well worth it.

“Missed this in History class!”
Reviewed December 27, 2013

I had no idea of this system of getting canal boats over the mountains. It was very interesting, the film was outstanding, the displays very well done and the property and buildings well maintained. It was wonderful to see and more people should visit.

“Revisit the Past”
Reviewed December 10, 2013

Bring a picnic lunch and spend the afternoon. Look back at history in amost beautiful setting. You will have a great time a learn a great deal about how boats went up and down a mountain 150 years ago. Make sure to see all the exhibits especially the Lemon House.

“You gotta see this to believe it!”
Reviewed September 27, 2013

This NPS Site does an absolutely fantastic job of explaining what the "Portage Railroad" was, by means of a great film, lots of models and exhibits, detailed signage, and helpful rangers. The engineering involved in the design and implementation was truly remarkable, and very serviceable for the 20 years it functioned as the best way across the Alleghenies on the way West. Also on the grounds is the Lemon House, an early hostelry, with period rooms and exhibits, and the Machine Shed, which houses the powerful stationary steam engines that powered the rail cars up and down. in each of a series of 10 "locks" (this is only one of them!) A special exhibit demonstrates some of the safety devices developed here. You really need to see the entire place to understand the process - ingenius! In nice weather, you can also stroll the paths and trails thru an old quarry. $4 per person, or use your Senior National Park pass for yourself and up to 3 guests.
