This place is extremely well kept and looks new. The rangers are friendly and helpful. There is a train in the visitor center and two building to explore. There is an App that you can use at this site and the ability to call a number on your phone to hear a guided tour.

Wish there was a bit more to see and maybe another train. $4 entry fee. Not a train enthusiast, so wouldn't go out of my way to visit, but glad I did.

The site is a short drive from Cresson, where we stayed. Road signs took us right there. We were the only visitors on a snowy, cold day, but the NPS ranger on duty fired up the film for us. Terrific film - beautifully written and produced, explains the Portage story fully. The exhibits make the unusual engineering of the Portage easy to understand. We hope to go back in warm weather, so we can walk the paths and see more.

The idea of pulling a boat out of the canal, putting it on a flatbed train car, pulling it up and over the mountains, and putting it back in the canal on the otherside is fascinating to me! They have a wonderful film that reenacts much of the times. Was easy for the kids to follow, and they did the Jr. Ranger program. Due to all the snow and ice, we weren't able to see much besides the visitor center museum. It did seem a little lacking without visiting the Lemon House or the #6 steamhouse, but would love to go again to see it all.

This relatively small piece of American History, that I'm sure many do not know about, is well worth the hour or two stop required to learn about East/West transportation and traveling through Pennsylvania during the early to mid 19th Century (1800's)! Plus, this site has a direct tie in to the infamous Johnstown, PA flood of 1889!
