“should be Hominy Retreat!”
Reviewed February 2, 2012

We were completely satisfied with our "escape" weekend in cabin 6. The fireplace and decor were perfect for a restful stay. We found a pleasant mix of amenities and "roughing it", in one package. Kudos to Paula and Andy for your efforts. We are already planning a return trip in warmer weather. Hell, we may invite the kids! Thanks again!

Room Tip: cabin 6 great for quiet, romantic getaway!

We have visited Cook Forest many many times. Usually we will stay at The Gateway Lodge or at Evergreen Cabins. Wanting to experience a new place we booked at Hominy Ridge. Owning vacation real estate myself, and having short-term tenants, I wanted to offer some suggestion to the ownership to improve business since they are apparently unaware of some basics.

First, All businesses today need to accept credit cards for payment, deposits, etc. Wanting to avoid the cut that the major cc companies take by demanding cash/check payments irks your customers and puts you at a disadvantage. It is the cost of doing business today sadly.

Second, as a property owner you cannot treat all of your customers based on the bad experiences that you have had in the past with unruly ones. Meaning, all of the warnings, rules, expectations, need to be streamlined into an agreement form that is explained and then signed by the renter when arriving. Notes every ten feet are childish and borderline offensive to renters - your competitors do not have these.

Lastly, in regards to the extras that are available to your customers, there are better ways of restricting access than a large master lock. Locks say you are not welcome! If a customer pays for a service a key could be given that allows for access. Inexpensive electronic locks are available also - I use these and they work wonderfully and allow me to track times and users to keep renters accountable. Once again, please do not treat all of your customers as if they are going to behave badly and cause damage.

Overall this property is beautiful, well kept, and the cabins are very nice. The reviews about water problems, etc are nonsense. I know that the owners keep up with this site and will be reading this so please consider the above and make some small changes. Believe me, when you put your paying customers first your business will explode. After all that's the point right?

Thanks you for your response. We take pride in our business so much that we do have to treat everyone the same. Unfortunately there have been a few bads experiences. We also work hard to keep the money in our pockets rather than making the credit card companies rich. This allows us to save for important renovations that we know the customer in the long run will appreciate more than just having the option of usng their credit card or not.
We have 1 thing under lock and key and that is the hot tub. It is outside and not able to be supervised visually. We have small children running around and have to protect them. And if we were to just give everyone a key then who is to say that the cover would be replaced so as not to freeze up in the winter. This is the best way to monitor this item.
We do appreciate each and evey response and take into consideration each review.

We were going to stay as a Bachlorette party, and as the days came close to arriving our plans changed into just an amazing weekend with my two best friends. As I was reading the past reviews, I had noticed a lot of people complaining over the water situation, uneven ground, etc. However, as a hotel front desk employee, I came to find that you will never satisfy a guest 100% to their every need. I believe that if you are traveling to Hominy Ridge (or any cabin in the woods), you need to expect to "rough it." It is NOT by any means a full service hotel. They hand you the key, and you be on your way. That is exactly what I expected, so therefore I was not disappointed in any means. The water did smell like Sulfer at times, but we made sure to take up a case, and two gallons of water. We made sure to go grocery shopping before we arrived, and anything we forgot we just bought from their on-site store, which had almost everything you can ask for! The prices in the store were fairly priced. I mean there's not really another store in the near area, so if the prices were a little higher than normal, I understood basically for the convience. The cabin was so much nicer than I had even anticipated. It looked almost like it had just been renovated! We took our own DVD player up and found it wasn't compatible for their TV, so they let us borrow theirs! It was nice because it also had a VHS, which is now hard to find these days! My friends and I basically stayed inside the whole time with a little exploring around the area (being that we were the only ones there throughout the whole property). There were plenty of activities in the area, however it wasn't really the time of year for it. We made homemade beef stew that lasted us the whole weekend. I loved the place, it was exteremly quiet and peaceful, and my friends and I plan on making this a yearly event. Thank you Paula and Andy for providing us the place to put our rough times behind us and enjoy so many great memories!

Room Tip: If you have 3 people or less, I would definatly reccommend staying in cabin 6! It's the perfect...

Romantic and wonderful. We enjoyed everything about our stay from the fireplace to the location. A little rustic but we loved it!

My hubby and I came to Hominy Ridge to celebrate our 10 year wedding annivesary. We stayed in Cabin# 6 which is a 1 bedroom cabin. The cabin was very comfy and cozy and has all the major necessities for your stay. Hominy Ridge has a store on site that is nicely stocked and unlike alot of stores in the area is open late. The owners, Andy and Paula were a pleasure to deal with and very friendly! My husband and I have been coming to Cook Forest for the past 13 years and have never stayed at the same place twice. After staying here I think that just might change as we truly enjoyed our weekend getaway in the woods! The only suggestion we would offer would be a new mattress in the bedroom as this one wasn't the most comfortable!

We are thankful for customers like you. Believe it or not the mattress is only as old as the cabin, 5 years old. We will one day change it. But probably not any time soon because of its age and we have much older ones that will get replaced first. We hope to see you return again!

Cabin # 6 ( 1 bedroom, futon, very clean & cozy) nestled in the woods has everything you need. Wildlife, tree roots, uneven ground, that's the beauty of being in the woods. Yes there are rules, hotels have them too. The owners are always seen working on the cabins and the grounds to keep things in good shape for all to enjoy. Take your special someone or your children (there is a play area), build a campfire or light a fire in the fireplace. Relax, take a hike, enjoy nature. Thanks Paula and Andy for making our getaway at Hominy Ridge very enjoyable. Guests from Ohio..

Thank you. Well said. When you come to the woods you have to expect what nature gives us. However, we do strive for the best possible accomodations for everyone. That is why there are rules to make it possible. Those that dont like the rules are the ones that will be sure to break them.

Our Fall trip to Hominy Ridge was enjoyable. We stayed in cabin #5, a 3 bedroom cabin with 1 bath and kitchen. There were clean linens on the beds, and floors were swept. However, the dust on the hanging lamps, curtains and window sills could use a really, really, good cleaning. As other reviewers noted, there were notes about conserving water. However, I think these notes are there for the benefit of guests to try and avoid a problem, and not meant to be rude by any means. The well water does have a strong sulphur smell, but think it's important to realize that this is the woods, and perhaps bringing in some bottled water would be helpful. The site was nice, surrounded by trees and had an enjoyable fire pit area. Note, you have to purchase fire wood there. Cannot bring in. The site also had enough parking for 3 vehicles.

The general store had a good selection of items in case you forgot anything. The employees were pleasant and made conversation with you. There was a public hot tub availalbe. Note you have to reserve it and it costs $15.00. We did not use it so can't comment on it. It looked nice.

As I said, we enjoyed ourselves, but be prepared that these cabins are not immaculate. However, if you are looking to sit around a camp fire with friends, or go hiking on some great trails, the cabin might be a good fit for location.

Enjoy.

Thank you for your reveiw. We are glad you had a great time here.
We do appreciate each review. It brings to light the things that may get overlooked. ANd we do take them seriously to the point that if there is something that needs attention, it gets taken care of as soon as possible. Thank you. The water smell is in the hot water tanks and has been remedied. We knew that was an issue as it always is with well water and iron/sulpher. However our water is tested quarterly and is safe for drinking and is treated with Culligan and a filter system.
