“A wonderful and peaceful stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2010

We recently stayed at the Confluence House B&B. It's a charming house, lots of character, well appointed. We enjoyed the service and attention of the Proprietor, Sandy. The house and rooms are clean and welcoming, peaceful but for 4 urban guests who felt a need to be unpleasantly loud in the hallway early in the morning. A pitty but not a prohibition. We'll stay again. Sandy's extraordinary breakfast totally soothed the experience of hearing the early morning cackle of the birds from Pittsburgh.

Please read this review knowing that I expect a lot, and my husband is a very light sleeper. Sally, the new owner was certainly accommodating, but we never felt pampered or special. The old house is very nicely decorated and kept clean. Located on the main street of Confluence there is a constant trickle of traffic during the day and periodic vehicles during the night, which can be heard quite well in the front bed rooms. The rumble of the trains and loud whistle is present day and night. Our first night was spent sleepless in the front room, we then went down for breakfast - we needed to be served 1/2 hour earlier then the other guests due to an outing appointment we had to meet - Sally accommodated us by serving us early, which was very nice of her, but she served us in the kitchen, instead of the dinning room, and we got to listen to her clanging dishes while unloading the dishwasher and making breakfast for the other guests. We both agreed we felt we were in a way being punished for making her cook early. The breakfast was good - pancakes - but not pleasant. We decided to check out a day early. Sleepless night and not so special breakfast not a good combination. She offered us a change to the back room. We decided to give it a second chance. The back room was a little better as far as the traffic sounds, but the trains were still loud and clear. We had breakfast at the regular time with the other guests - were served in the dining room - a much better experience. The food was good. The men left the table not quite full. The B&B lacked little pampering extras that I've encountered at other establishments that seems to add to the experience like specialty soaps in the bathroom, or big selection of unique teas for breakfast, or table set with amazingly beautiful dishes - some of the little touches that make a place stand out. So all in all - clean and accommodating - not special or pampering.

We stayed in Confluence while on a bicycle trip from Pittsburgh to Washington DC on the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal Trails. This is a wonderful old house right in the heart of historic downtown Confluence. The furnishings are very attractive, and the rooms were comfortable and reasonably-priced. We got dinner right down the street at Riverside Pizza, 841 Oden Street -- it is take-out only, so best to call in your order ahead of time, and then bring it back to the B&B. We would have gone to the River's Edge Cafe, 203 Yough Street, but they were not open on the day we were there (Thursday, too early in the season) -- we ate there once before, and it was good.

The best part of this bed and breakfast was the breakfast in the morning. Sandy, who has run the B&B for owners Jim and Barbara for some time, was in the process of purchasing the B&B from Jim and Barbara when we were there. Sandy keeps busy running a catering business as well, so she is a talented chef. When we booked our room, we were asked if we had any dietary restrictions or preferences, so we admitted that we are vegan. Accordingly, Sandy prepared a delicious vegan breakfast for us (soy yogurt with fruit, juice, fried polenta served like pancakes with maple syrup, and potatoes with peppers, etc.). Also, she thoughtfully made a side dish of ham for my brother, who is not vegan. I think the B&B will be in good hands with Sandy!

My wife and I stayed at the Confluence House as part of a brief getaway over Labor Day weekend. The house was orginally built by the first doctor in Confluence around 1900, and has been beautifully restored. The owners Barb an Jim Harrold were very accomodating, and provided us some great stories about the history of the town, the house and their ongoing search for antiques. We stayed in the Youghiogheny Room - our room was very nice, the bed was comfortable and we had a private bath. We arrived Friday night, took a 15+ mile ride east the Great Allegheny Passage. Friday night we walked to the River's Edge and had a great dinner on the side porch - listening to the gentle rapids on the Yough River as we enjoyed our crab cakes and rainbow trout. Then we walked to the Lucky Dog for a few drinks and some great music. On Saturday we got started off with a great homecooked breakfast and biked back and forth to Ohiopyle (22 mile round trip). We enjoyed a some ice cream and enjoyed the Music in Mountains festival near the falls. The Great Allegheny Passage between Confluence and Ohiopyle is absolutely beautiful. The only downside was that the house is located on the "main drag" through Confluence, versus some of the other B&B's that are situated on farms a few miles out of town. Overall a very nice getaway to the Laurel Highlands.
