“Good But Room for Improvement”
Reviewed June 17, 2011

Perhaps I read too many positive reviews of this hotel and I set my expectations too high. My recent stay at this hotel did have positives but also some areas of concern. First off, the positives. The rooms are clean and sized nicely with flat panel TV. Bedding is comfortable. The 7-11 steps away in the same complex is very convenient. The shuttle service is a huge plus running seven days a week to the airport and other nearby points to the hotel. A complimentary breakfast (mostly continental with a make-a-waffle area) is served.

On the other side, it is the first hotel breakfast I attended that did not have orange juice available. The alarm clock in my room was broken (missing lights on clock so you could not tell the time at certain points). There was no "DND" or "quiet please" sign in my room. There was a hanger to leave on your door by 11 p.m. to request time of housekeeping service the next day. I put it on my door by that time requesting afternoon service and it was never picked up. I returned to my room the next night to find no service had taken place. I used the same towels and watched the trash pile up.

Staff, especially the shuttle driver and breakfast area assistant, were friendly and helpful.

Note that Chester is a former industrial center and the city has that visual character. Don't expect that you are staying in a vibrant modern area and you will hear sirens outside the hotel from time to time.

So, a mixed review. A solid choice with several areas that could use improvement. The airport shuttle and competitive pricing may make it a viable alternative for some.

For train travelers, you can either catch the train into Center City from the airport terminals or take the Wilmington/Newark regional rail from the Chester Transportation Center just over a half mile from the hotel.

We recently stayed at this hotel to be convenient to Swarthmore and we were very happy with the room and service. While the location (opposite Widener University) does not offer much, we were visiting relatives in Swarthmore and ate at restaurants in Media (Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurant), Havertown (Giampino's Cucina Italiana), Springfield (Cascata Gourmet Pizza and the Liberty Diner) -- all of which we recommend.

This hotel is far above the average Best Western with spotless, well appointed rooms, which are spacious and fresh. The breakfast is hot and ample (cereal, breads, waffles, fruit). The front desk staff was endlessly helpful in answering questions and assisting us with our rental car and other travel-related issues. Very nice staff!

Very difficult to get into and out of Philadelphia on a weekend night...
You can get into the city by taking the train from the airport (and use the hotel shuttle to get to the airport) or use the shuttle to go from Chester Transportation Center and the train from there.
To return from the city, you need to take the train to the airport, and the last hotel shuttle pickup at the airport is 12:45am... after which your only option is a cab which will run $40 from downtown. There are bus options but I'm not going to explore them at this time.

We took our son to Widener University and needed a one-night stay. Everything was clean, there was an iron & ironing board, a refrigerator, coffeemaker and blow dryer...all the conveniences of home. We absolutely loved the large, easy walk-in shower. The only bad thing was that the parking lot was marked private and we didn't realize we could park there until after we went in to register. We like large signs telling us where to go. :)

Stayed here for one night and really enjoyed it. I typically do not stay at Best Westerns as I'm loyal to other hotel chains but this lived up to all expectations. Can't comment on the value as the stay was funded by Widener University, but I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. And you can't beat it for a Widener visit - just across the street.

I thought the neighborhood, while iffy, was fine. No people hanging outside, even at the 7-11 which is right outside the lobby in the same complex, which by the way has graduate student housing for Widener and a bank (not a clinic of any type). The street quieted down fine at night (this was a Thursday night stay) and I slept well. Spacious room, modern decor, very helpful staff.

Consider this a top choice that's barely 15 minutes from PHL and I would imagine not the expense of the other airport prooperties.

I can't comment on the value of this hotel as we were put up in this hotel by US airways after they messed up our flight connections in philadelphia airport and caused us to miss our flight.

But after this stressfull experience we were very pleased with the standard of the hotel. The room was very spacious and finished to a high standard. Everything was clean and modern and the bed was comfy. The only negative about the room was there was no bath, only a shower.

The guy behind the desk was very helpful and both the shuttle drivers were really friendly.
we were able to get toothbrushes and toothpaste from the front desk which was a big plus since our bags were on the plane without us! Breakfast was typical for a best western, ok but not outstanding.

I would definitely recommend this hotel if you are flying in or out of philadelphia.

I was pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and amenities of this hotel and attribute it to its newness. This is actually a very, very nice hotel with very, very poor management.

For the positives, there were 2 computers with free fast internet access. There was also a printer to print out boarding passes, which was a nice touch. The parking was in the back, but not too far of a walk and I never felt threatened or unsafe coming back late a night (despite the shady neighborhood). Most of the housekeeping staff during the week were also very nice, smiling and saying hello whenever we passed (more on that below). The room and bathroom were new and thus very nice and very clean. There were also easily accessible plugs in the lamps on all of the tables.

On the other hand, the cable was broken the entire time we were there, so we only got a few channels and many were duplicates. The water pressure wasn't great, but in fairness to the hotel there was a sign that the pipes were being worked on by the water department and that pressure may be low. Although most of the housekeeping staff was great, the weekend staff was useless. They didn't take our old towels and only gave us half the number of new towels that we had been receiving. They didn't replace the soap or the coffee supplies after the first day either. The nighttime front desk person was also a complete waste of space. She was completely unknowledgeable and incompetent, and worst of all she couldn't be taken away from her phone conversation from her boyfriend while customers were trying to get help all while smoking her cigarette right behind a big "Nonsmoking Hotel" sign! A guy in front of us was trying to get a shampoo and she looked at him as if he was speaking Latin. Finally she just said that she didn't have any to give him. Perhaps this isn't her fault; maybe she really didn't have access to supplies, in which case the manager/supervisor needs to change the policy. What kind of front desk person doesn't have authority to give guests needed supplies or amenities? We then asked for an extra laundry bag, you know, the plastic kind that are always in hotel closets? Again, like we were speaking Latin. She dragged out a huge cloth laundry bag that the housekeeping staff must use, which we politely declined. The deer-in-headlights look was not attractive. In fairness to the hotel, when I complained the next morning about the smoking, a supervisor took care of the situation immediately and was very apologetic.

Overall, this was a great hotel that needs better management. The location is shady, but if your goal is simply a place to stay with free parking and free breakfast that's not too far to drive to the city, this is a great place!
