“Some logistics”
Review of Kentuck Knob

Kentuck Knob
Reviewed November 6, 2013

We visited this place on Saturday during foliage season, which is high season for this attraction.
We came earlier then our tour time, but they were completely booked and could not move us to earlier spot.
If you want, you could walk from visitor center to the house via sculpture garden. Garden is half way to the house, however, trail from the garden to the house is not marked - you need to choose unmarked trail, which is go up-hill. Sculpture garden is curios mixture of some contemporary sculpture (not everybody cup of tea) with some old red telephone boxes from UK.
If possible, go on sunny day. Guide told us that Wright was actively playing with skylights to route light through the house, however we visited on very grey day and missed this part.
Café is small and by 2 PM they run out of soups and sandwiches, however ice cream was nice, so for lunch is better to go to Ohiopyle which is 5-10 min away.

We had a wonderful time touring the house, and then strolling through the grounds and viewing the sculpture garden. I recommend touring this house first before seeing “Fallingwater” – which is a quick seven miles away. The staff here is very helpful, especially the one manager – Emily. The entire area, the “Laurel Highlands” is beautiful and not one where you just want to do a “drive by visit”. This is one area where you want to linger.
Takeaways: Visit the nearby town of Ohiopyle (where they are opening a riverside Falls visitors center in Spring 2014)
Stay right next door to the Kentuck Knob home like we did at the fully equipped visitors’ cottage.

Karen was our tour guide, she was excellent! This is a must see. Go here before Falling Water. The house is amazing, however, nothing compares to Frank Llloyd Wrights Falling Water. We took my parents for their 50th anniversary and we had a great time. Go to the Days Inn in Donegal it is close to both locations and you will not be disappointed!

We signed up for the in-depth tour and were lucky enough to share the guide with only 1 other person. With just the 3 of us, we were all able to have all of our questions answered and it was very intimate and informal. The house is very interesting. I'm into architecture but I imagine that, even it you're not, you would like this tour. The house is in a beautiful rural setting and is unique in many respects. I enjoyed the walk from the house back to the visitor center (as opposed to taking the bus). It's pretty and you walk through a meadow that has several sculptures and a piece of the Berlin wall.

We did the 9:30am Kentuck Knob in-depth tour and the 2pm Fallingwater regular tour. We had time in between to have a leisurely lunch in Ohiopyle (the little town you drive through to get from Kentuck Knob to Fallingwater) and to do a picture stop at Cucumber Falls (very pretty...also en route from KK to FW). We even had some time to spare so you might be able to do the 1pm tour. It made for a very nice and full, but quite relaxing, day.

Loved it almost as much as Fallingwater! The view was absolutely amazing, and the home much more "livable," all it was missing was the sound of the water cascading down the mountainside!
