The Lodge at Chalk Hill

older facility, but a just right location to stay if you like historical attractions. This hotel is along the National Road and is close to Fort Necessity, Braddock's Grave, Friendship Hill, and historic restaurants. Also, close to FallingWater and Kentuck Knob, and Ohiopyle State Park. Be sure to take your camera. The price for this hotel is affordable and the staff is very helpful. It is not a luxury hotel, so don't expect high-end amenities. However, it is a lovely little hotel to stay at for a getaway weekend. Oh, and there is a winery next door.

We stayed here for 3 nights in Oct 09. At first I have to say we found it a bit primitive but as time went on, it grew on us. The room was comfortable and clean enough although the sheets and towels need replacing urgently. The view of the lake was nice and the breakfast basic but good (except the coffee which was dreadful) However wi-fi and ice are only available in the lodge - a long hike up hill. It was reasonable value for the area, which is quite expensive and it is very convenient for Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob - the purpose of our visit. The whole complex needs updating. It could be really lovely with a little TLC. The Lodge building could be a nice restaurant and bar area in the evening - instead there are just a few people sitting in the gloom staring at lap tops. What a waste. Also it badly needs a self service laundry. The nearest one is several miles away. Still good luck to the owners - let's hope they can find the capital to make that investment.

I don't feel this place is as bad as some of the prior reviews make it out to be. Yes, the towels are cheap and thin. Yes, they have a 48 hour cancellation policy - and can you really blame them for enforcing it? Yes, the place could benefit from remodeling. But this was a great location for our visits to Fallingwater amd Kentuck Knob, and Christian Klay Winery was just around the corner. The patio that overlooks the pond (though not the least bit private from your neighbors), was nice. The dorm size refrigerator and microwave in the basic room was a plus. And the price was reasonable. So as long as you understand ahead of time this isn't going to be anything extraordinary, I think you'll be ok.

The afternoon of our reservations, we received a call that my son had broken his ankle at camp. Called immediately (2:30p) to cancel due to a medical emergency, was told the charge had already been processed and could not be reversed. Have called the mgr twice and asked for an exception to the 48-hr cancellation policy because of a medical emergency and/or credit for a later date. Have always been told "will check with management and call back". No return calls, just a credit receipt for a one night stay, processed at 7:30p that evening as a "no show". I understand a business has policies but all policies have exceptions - would like to believe management has some compassion and moral ethics involved in applying their decisions. Would not stay at the Lodge under any circumstances.

These individuals do not tell you when you make reservations, but there is a cancellation fee if not cancelled at least 48 hours ahead of arrival. They do not tell you this when you make the reservation nor do they tell you when you cancel the reservation. We were charged as a no-show for the first night of the reservation even though we had cancelled the day before arrival. We were not aware of the 48-hour cancellation notice so were only concerned with 24 hour notice, which is customary. We had stayed there for several years and were pleased with the accommodations. We will not stay there again because they have such a poor business ethic in not notifying guests of the cancellation policy. It is not on the website that I visited to obtain the telephone number either. I suggest they add it to their website to allay further confusion with their guests.

I have stayed at the Lodge three times since April, 2009. Two times as a single and once with my daughter and grandson. Rooms are comfortable, clean and the view of the lake is breathtaking (if you are lucky enough to get one of the rooms with the view -- one visit was a view of the woods). Staff is always very friendly and continental breakfast is OK. I will be staying there again in the next month. I have personal business in Uniontown and the Lodge is very convenient. Microwave and fridge in the room is very convenient. Just wish they had a pool!

My sister and her husband have also stayed there for the same time periods. The rooms with the king bed and small kitchen are great. Kitchen is adequately equipped with dishes, pots & pans, etc.
