Bird in Hand Bake Shop
Ranked #1 of 12 Shopping in Bird in Hand

Off by itself, the real value of this bakery is found in the products which are also available at the Bird in Hand Farmers Market. The Bake Shop is worth the trip for at least two reasons: one is it's a nice drive. Two is there's a wide variety of items available. Customer service is fantastic... we were eyeing an angel food cake that we knew was more than we'd eat--a young girl offered to cut a portion off for us... (She even sliced and repackaged it.) As others have noted there is some shopping available that's both "Amish" and not. It's a comfortable, friendly place... great place to stop with kids as there's lots of room outside to run and an area where farm animals can be fed. It won't, however, necessarily be a "backwoods little place." The tour busses have found it (there's a special parking area).

Stopped by an information center closer to Lancaster to ask where we should drive to see and experience the Amish culture. Bird-in-hand bake shop was the first recommended stop on a route including 3-4 stops. The store was a mix of baked goods, amish-made goods and some stuff that was obviously not amish-made. We bought some shoo-fly pie which apparently is the one they're most famous for, and in addition we tried the shoo-fly pie with chocolate. Both were extremely tasty. You don't have to buy a big piece though since a small piece will suffice for most people. And if you can eat a lot of this you probably shouldn't. We also tried a cherry and chocolate fudge. It was the first ever fudge we tasted and it was very good. There's a nice area outside where you can sit and enjoy the cakes you buy inside. We especially enjoyed the special "hammock" chairs on the lawn outside. Nothing special to know about the visiting the amish apart from respecting their way of life and the policy of not taking photos of them. You can take long distance photos of amish people where you can't identify them, but e.g. photos of them inside this store is a no-no.

When we discovered the Bird in Hand Bake Shop about ten years ago it was because we followed a sign on Rte 340 that took us off the busy road and we love rising through the farms. Nestled in the farms was this wonderful place! We have been to Lancaster approximately 3-4 times a year from Long Island since then and we never think of skipping it! This is a must visit! Besides the incredible pies and breads, there is a great gift shop, homemade icecream and you can enjoy it all while sitting outside at the tables while kids can visit the animals and play on their jungle gym. Amish owned and run, the people are wonderful, friendly and this is just the best place ever!

This cute country little shop has everything you need! Clean bathrooms, great bakery, nice selection of things made from the Amish. Loved the whoopie pies and the toffee was amazing!!! If you are in the area, stop by you won't regret it!

Maybe I just don't like this kind of baked good, but everything seemed very bland and/or overly sweet to me. I was fascinated by the different flavors of angel food cake, so we tried the walnut one, but it had just about no taste to it. The famous chocolate pie was sickly sweet and my husband threw it out after one bite. Maybe the savory breads are better.
