“Great visitors center !”
Reviewed August 20, 2012

We had visited Benezette to see the elk several years ago. It was a great experience, but I could see how the residents of the town might be annoyed with the constant 10mph traffic and visitors pulling into their driveways and yards to see the elk. This visitors center was a tremendous improvement with large open food plots to attract elk and a wide variety of wildlife. Keep your eyes scanning the woods as you will see wildlife throughout your stay (we saw deer, elk and turkey during our short stay.) The center is beautiful with a great variety of informational displays to entertain our family of adults and 9-13 year olds. Well planned and maintained paths to viewing areas and an option for a horse drawn wagon ride that takes you through fields. Elk are most likely to be viewed one hour after sunrise and one hour before sunset - PLAN YOUR TRIP AROUND THESE VIEWING TIMES. You may see an occasional elk otherwise, but the big groups can be more reliably viewed at sunrise and sunset.

“Stop if passing through”
Reviewed August 4, 2012

We stopped on our way home from a weekend at the PA Grand Canyon/Wellsboro. As it was July and afternoon, we didn't see any Elk but we stopped at a little ice cream store and had hot dogs and ice cream. Have been here before on a fall morning and have seen elk. It was really neat. Is a nice, scenic drive regardless!

“Elk Visitors' Centre”
Reviewed August 1, 2012

We don't have Elk in around Toronto and it was interesting to see them in their "natural" habitat. The visitors' centre guarantees a viewing because of the crops the facility grows to entice the Elk to stay. The centre itself is very welcoming and beautifully built. This is a must see if you didn't have luck on the Elk scenic roads.

“If you are in the area”
Reviewed July 30, 2012

make sure you go see the elk. What a beautiful reserve and the wagon (sleigh in the winter) ride is delightful. The herd of eld are so accustomed to the horses they just stand there and watch the wagon go by. You get within ten to twenty feet of the elk. Also, make sure you see the movie which is excellent. The wagon ride is $6.00 and the movie is $3.00. The gift shop is worth a look and they science and lab center is wonderful.

“Staycation in PA Wilds - Stop at Elk Country Visitor Center”
Reviewed July 22, 2012

After hearing a show on NPR about "staycations", a group of us (17) headed to the PA Wilds for the day on our first ever staycation. We decided to start our trip following the PA Artisan Trail and made stops in Ridgway, PA Council of the Arts on Main Street. Something like 40 different artists are exhibited here. Personally I was amazed at the artist that photographed and framed flowers. We then stopped at a wood carving shop at the top of Bootjack Hill. The gentleman there was a great storyteller and shared with us how their Rendezvous festival got started.

Next, it was on to Emporium for lunch at CAbin Kitchen. It was good, homemade food at reasonable prices. We walked down the road to the Chamber for their "emporium" of more artisans on the PA Artisan Trail. My favorite was the wildlife photographs and handmade scarfs. The homemade jelly was a hit with kids. Back on the road we stopped at Grant's wrought iron store. Neat place to pick up those one-of-a-kind gift. Was surprised at how cute the shop was.

Next we traveled to Benezette for the highlight of our trip - the Elk Country Visitor Center. The road to the Center winds around and then you see this beautiful building. I mentioned that it kind of looks like fort wilderness at Disney. It turns out a consultant from Disney was involved and you see the influence. We arrived around 4:30 and it was hot and humid. The elk come out to the field once it cools down so we traveled down to the Benezette Hotel for a great relaxing dinner. Reasonable prices and LARGE servings. Kids loved the nachos. Fish fry a big fav. We stopped at a newly opened wine shop on the way down off the hill as well. Benezette Wines on 2nd. They offered some different flavors - we picked up a strawberry rhubarb and bought one that is named rattlesnake. Sampling was fun.

With cooler temperatures we returned back to the Visitor Center. We enjoyed the 30 minutes "movie" for $3. It was animated and well done. The kids LOVED it. Well, the adults did too. We next took the horse drawn wagon ride for $10 pp. It lasts about one hour. This is very popular and you would want to make reservation. We saw about 30 elk and other wild life. No other way to say it - awesome! We didn't have time to check out the walking trails but could tell from the ride that many people on the trails saw the elk we did from the wagon. We had great conversations with many of the volunteers - Char was great. You can see they are there because they love it! Char's husband was the driver of our wagon. Many interactive educational opportunities for the kids in the center as well.

Overall it was great to experience a day in the PA Wilds with the Elk Country Visitor Center as the highlight of the trip. We were also surprised at how relaxing AND reasonable everything was. overall, it was a great relaxing day. Just one other note- cell service is pretty much non-existent so make sure if you are connecting up with others that your plans are firm.
