“Bedford Pa Fall Foliage Festival”
Reviewed November 2, 2009

Bedford Fall Foliage Festival is held the first two weekends in October. The town square is alive with vendors selling Appalachian Crafts, wood work, art, and plenty of homemade goodies- Fresh apple cider, fried chicken, and hand dipped ice cream along with kettle corn and Amish pretzels. This weekend featured the antique car parade. Plent of activities for the childern as well as wholesome adult entertainment. The community has plenty of walking tours including the graveyard walk. The county also features a self guided tour of covered bridges. Historic Bedford Village features log cabins, Indian artifacts, and play house. A great time for all

“Amazing, fun, historical, relaxing place.”
Reviewed August 17, 2009

Amazing that Trip Advisor has not received reviews for all the wonderful things to do while traveling in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Over a two day visit, we managed to squeeze in a

1. few nice restaurants (see separate reviews ) (Grade B overall)
2. shopped in a variety of nice Bedford downtown shops including Founder's Crossing. (Grade B+)
3. visited historic Bedford Springs Hotel (Grade A)
4. historic Fort Bedford Museum ( Grade B+)
5. Also toured, near sunset, 6 of the covered bridges in the area, (Grade A)
6. Old Bedford Village for the British/French/Indian War reenactment. ( Grade A+)
7. National Museum of the American Coverlet. ( Grade B)
8. Also visited and took advantage of the recreation facility of the very well kept Shawnee State Park just outside of Bedford. (Grade A)
9. Also toured the picturesque 1806 old log church and cemetery in nearby Schellsburg. (Grade A)
10. Had dinner at Ed's Steakhouse (Grade F) just awful.....

Most of these sites have minimal admission charges or none at all. Most presented able opportunities to take photographs so that you can take home some excellent memories. We would be hard pressed to name a couple of our favorites but Old Bedford Village is at the top. It is another professionally operated living history museum run by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC). Just like Landis Valley in Lancaster County, Pa., this site brings history alive. PHMC has to be proud of their accomplishments. Great job. Great job also to the terrific folks in Bedford County. For a town that has a little over 3,000 kind souls, there is much to do and much to see. Thanks for giving us an enjoyable weekend.

PS: Get a Starbucks, then life in Bedford, Pa. would be complete. We had to drive 18 miles one way to get our favorite beverages.

“Old Fashion Christmas Holiday”
Reviewed December 10, 2007

If you are interested in stepping back in time for an old fashioned Christmas, then Bedford, PA is the perfect location. Bedford is a lovely, quaint town with a Capra-type quality, featuring a park by the river with Christmas reenactments by candlelight in a historic village, wonderful restaurants, home-made candies, crafts, lovely shops and boutiques. There is a small movie theater in town that only shows first run movies, which was amazing. It was a true, old-fashioned movie theater with velvet drapes and authentic decor. As for accommodations, we stayed at the Silhouette Lodge on Monsour Sheep Farm, which is the largest sheep farm on the eastern coast. In this quaint country setting, you will have complete privacy. We took a hike through the countryside, visiting a revolutionary war cemetery. By the morning sunrise, we watched horses on running up the hill. In the evening, we had a large fire and took advantage of the hot tub and thousands of stars in sky. The lodge is fully equipped with linens and towels, four bedrooms, two baths, game room, stocked kitchen and living room. There was even a Christmas tree and decorations waiting for our arrival. The nicest part of this vacation was the reasonable price. For a special splurge, visit Bedford Springs Hotel, which is absolutely beautiful for the holidays.
