Walk through the old buttresses, see how the old WWII Veterans lived. Ride you bike over from Ft. Stevens. Do a little Geo-Caching. It's worth the stop. It's self guided...bring along a flashlight.

I love historical landmarks where you can visualize and feel the past in the present. This place is all that. It's an old structure built into a hill. For a place that used to house canons and artillery, it's actually a quite peaceful and beautiful experience. I didn't know what to expect and really enjoyed my visit. Bring a picnic on a nice day.

Well...I live near there...so it isn't really like I have 'traveled' there.
Battery Russell is a fun place for kids who love to run around the concrete battery. For teens, it is a place to scare one another and make echoes with their voices, while attempting to frighten one another with tales of the 'the chain man'. I suppose if I were there at dusk and I heard chains clanking...I'd be running for that car with automatic door opener in hand! For others, it is history that makes Battery Russell interesting. Built to protect the Columbia River entrance during the Civil War, it is the only place in the mainland of the United States to have been bombed in WW II. Fortunately that Japanese submarine didn't do any real damage and the battery is there today for all to enjoy a bit of history and mystery. A fun place for all......especially the mosquitoes.
