We have visited the Columbia Gorge and waterfalls several time. Always impressive, although in late spring the waterfalls are bigger and more impressive than in summer or fall. But we cannot do without a visit when we are in the Portland area. It's alway a special experience!

Our hotel manager suggested this route, as we were headed from Troutdale to the Sternwheeler trip on the Columbia River. Gorgeous scenery abounded at every turn in the road, including overlooks, streams, and several waterfalls, including the famed Multnomah Falls. Hiking opportunities abound! There are picnic areas. We wish we could be here when the fall colors are bountiful. Plan for plenty of photo ops!

This drive is not to be missed. It is truely one of the most beautiful scenic drives a traveller can do. Get your camera on the ready. If you are travelling in this area have a look at the Oregon Tourism website, scenic drives, it describes it well and the pictures depict the true beauty of the area.

Traveling between Portland and Hood River be sure to get off of Interstate 84 at Troutdale and on to "Historic Columbia River Highway." This is a winding 2 lane road versus I84 but it goes directly past the viewpoints and waterfalls that byou will want to see. First stop is at the "Portland Women's Forum State Scenic Overlook" (Chanticleer Point). Then - Don't miss the "Vista House at Crown Point." After Crown Point you pass several waterfalls. Multnomeh Falls is the most famous but other falls are worth seeing and most are very close to the road. There is some good hiking trails in the area of the falls but not necessary if walking is difficult. After leaving the "Historic" highway and returning to I84, we made another stop at the Bonneville Fish Hatchery. The hatchery has a beautiful location and we took a relaxing and informative tour of the grounds.

Overall my trip to Portland was unremarkable at best, but this was easily the highlight. Some of the views will really take your breath away. We hiked up several of the waterfalls and found that to be a great experience. You can really see some great pacific northwest scenery that way. Take the main highway that runs parallel back to save time, but the views that come with this highway should not be missed if you are in the area.
