“Amazing depression-ira construction”
Review of Timberline Lodge

Built during the depression by what were considered unskilled labors, Timberline lodge has withstood the test of time in a fairly hostile environment.

Lots of snow and wind, as well as a fairly busy tourist crowd.

If you're in the area, it's a must-see destination.

This is one of the most impressive public buildings I have had the pleasure of visiting and I live in Washington DC and have traveled widely throughout the U.S. and abroad. This is a WPA building and what they built here over an 18-month period of time, with incredible care and attention to detail, is absolutely mind-boggling. Kudos to the creators for so well documenting its creation. Not only is it a stunning structure, but the rooms are extraordinarily comfortable and the views spectacular. Scrutinize the finest details, down to the nuts and bolts of the wrought iron handles and hinges, and I defy you not to be impressed. One could only hope that if the nation were ever presented with a depression as profound as that one, that an Administration would rise to the occasion with such a public works project. and with one of such undeniable success by any measure. Do not miss the movies about the making of this great structure. And make sure to get out on some of the trails to appreciate the nature that inspired its creation.

Historic Timberline Lodge offers travelers an excellent view of Mt Hood, good food and service and comfortable rooms. The history in this lodge and the craftmanship that went into constructing the facility is worth seeing and reading about. The rooms are expensive and better value can be found in the nearby area.

We took the Magic Mile lift up to 7,000 feet and then hiked our way back down to the lodge. The views were fantastic! The Magic Mile lift is $15 per person, which seemed a little pricey, for the 10 minute ride, but I enjoyed the view so much that I got over it quickly. Only downside is that when we got back to the lodge at 2:00 pm, we were very hungry and neither of the cafes in the lodge was open.

A co-worker and I had a weekend day free, so drove up here just to visit. The lodge itself is a work of art - lots of wonderfully-detailed art carvings, a huge fireplace, and a cosy, welcoming atmosphere. The displays and history overview are quite interesting. And, of course, the view is spectacular any time of the year. We had the opportunity to eat on the second floor restaurant, by a window, so could watch people coming and going with their snowboards and skis (even in July!) I also heard that this location was used for some of the exterior shots in 'The Shining', which added yet another dimension to the visit! Well worth the drive from Portland!
