My husband and I stopped here for lunch. The restaurant is in a historic building in the middle of the downtown. The service was friendly. We asked by a number of the staff how we were doing. We both ordered the chicken salad. It was generous and came with freshly roasted dark chicken meat, which was a nice change from the usual breast meat. ( You can order breast meat for a slight additional charge.) the salad also had shredded cabbage and other fresh veggies and hard boiled eggs. It was delicious! Next time we are going through the Columbia Gorge again, we will certainly make a stop here for lunch agai.

Wonderful seafood, fresh pasta, good salad, efficient staff, all this in a well maintained historic building. This place would succeed in a large city - we would return.

This restaurant was so enjoyable and fun, it made our day! Housed in a historic building, the atmosphere is electric! If it could speak, "it would tell tales of the past"! The interior has great old portraits on the wall, and everything has a "yester-year" look to it. Even the piano player, perched above the tables, plays popular tunes of the past. Besides everything being "Fun", the food was great too! Loved it all!

If you have the time while visiting the Dalles, stop at the Baldwin Saloon for a meal or a beer. Quite an amazing building, and our waiter was very educated in the history, which he shared with us, including a fabulous collection of old paintings on the wall. This area of Oregon and Washington have lots of history to share from the late 1800's so worth a stop for those interested in the early settlers and their building accomplishments (Maryhill Museum, Stonehenge and the Vista House to name a few). We ate late so many items on the menu were gone, although that which we had was tasty. We also missed the 78 year old woman who climbs the steep stairs to play the piano from a platform above the bar. Guess we'll have to return!

The Baldwin Saloon is hidden just off the main streets in The Dalles in an area that the old timers here would call 'China town'. It is an institution in this town and is located in a historic building (ask to see the picture album while you wait for your meal). They make everything by hand (including bread, pasta, etc) and everything is local bought. I'm not sure why they don't make a bigger deal out of this than they do- Excellent service and ambiance. Large amount of menu options and they're always open to splitting a salad between two diners. In good weather there is an excellent outdoor dining option. Closed Sundays (verify this before coming).
