“Decent burgers and shakes; the fry sauce is ketchup and mayo”
Review of Big Jim's Drive-In

Big Jim's Drive-In

Certificate of Excellence
Price range: $5 - $20
Cuisines: Fast Food
Description: Celebrating 50 Years It’s not just a slogan at Big Jim’s Drive-In located in The Dalles, Oregon. Dedication and consistency is what we value and want to serve our customers the best food possible in a relaxed, clean atmosphere. We’re GOOD food, NOT fast food. We never cook our burgers ahead of time. We make our own dressing for the burgers, tartar sauce, fry sauce and our own recipe for chili. We still make those old-fashioned milk shakes, Banana Splits and Sundaes. Our Waffle Cones are a big hit with one of our 16 flavors of UMPQUA brand hard ice cream in them. Try one of our 5 FRESH FRUIT milk shakes or Smoothies. Big Jim's burgers made with love.

You order at a counter and the food is brought to you. Lots of burger and shake options (many at additional cost) and they make a big deal out of something called fry sauce which tasted like ketchup and mayo mixed together. The food was good, service was prompt and it seems as if this place has been around a long time.

For husband, son and I to eat fast food cost $35 but the portions are big and the food tastes great. They make their own waffle cones which are delicious and Tillamook ice cream is always great. They are fast and friendly. One of the last few places you can get a fresh hand packed hamburger.

I visited my brother to take him to lunch for his birthday. I reluctantly said ok when he suggested Big Jim's. I didn't want to go to a "fast food" spot. Wow, what a surprise when I walked in and saw fresh salmon sandwich/burger for $5.95! And it was delicious! Don't pass this by just because it's a small fast foody looking place. If it's in season surely it will be on the menu (and my brother said the fish and chips were good also).

This is worth the stop. We read some good reviews and decided to try it out. We got three burgers (2 minis and a normal size) and fries. The fries were sublime and delicious. The real showstopper was the blackberry shake. You know how some places put in flavoring or powder to flavor the shake. This shakes was chock full of big delicious blackberries. Delicious. Make sure that you stop here if you are passing through. We sat outside and loved it. Highly recommended! Only thing is that it is a little bit spendy. So go for the minis if you want to save money, but splurge on the shake.

My wife suggested we try a local burger joint while on a supplies run from Goldendale. We tried Big Jim's over Burgerville. We went the mini-burger route with shakes for the both of us. The burgers, fries, & shakes were outstanding! Service was fast and "to the point". Downside was the price...quite a bit higher than expected. But we will return soon!
