“4th US Infantry”
Reviewed March 3, 2011

Ft. Dalles has a lot more history that is missing that what can be seen by the casual tourist. It was the home to units of the 4th US Infantry Regiment when it was stationed on the west coast. From here troops moved into central Washington, in 1855, and these events started the Yakama War which lasted for nearly 3 years.

If you look towards the river you will see a school with a flag pole. The flag pole marks the approximate location of the flag pole when the fort was active.

If you are interested in the Indian wars of the Pacific Northwest then this is a must stop place. Otherwise, I might pass it up because there isn't much to see unless you're just happen to be in the area.

“So much interesting history!”
Reviewed October 30, 2010

I love the Fort Dalles Museum! It's in the old surgeon's quarters from the original 1856 fort. How cool is that? And it's FULL of cool historic tidbits! They have wagons, a BUNCH of neat old vehicles, an actual old homestead that is set up like a functioning house inside, and all kinds of cool stuff. They also have helpful staff that love to chat and walk you around, pointing stuff out. In the summer, they even have concerts on the lawn. It's a beautiful spot. Don't miss it!

“Cool things to be found here”
Reviewed August 26, 2009

This is a pretty small museum but it is filled with a lot of old photos and items from the days when it was part of an Army fort. The museum is located in what was the surgeons quarters of the old fort. It is the last building of the fort still standing.
