Owner description: There’s no better place! The local elevation, pitch dark surrounding and crystal clear air make it perfect for star gazing. You won’t be lining up for one telescope. The Oregon Observatory is the largest astronomical viewing facility in the United States. Feast your eyes on far away galaxies. Recognize the rings of Saturn and the moons of Jupiter. Witness a meteor shower. Get a glimpse of globular clusters, nebula and deep space binary stars.

“Outstanding Value and Incredible Views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 26, 2012

This was a last minute adventure that was recommended to us by a person we met at the new pool...boy are we grateful for that person's advice to see this attraction in Sun River. For the $6 admission we were treated to a wonderful outdoor experience. The staff began the presentation (while we waited for darkness) with a brief sideshow that included answering questions about our planet and the universe. After the introduction we were able to walk around the observatory and look thtrough a variety of telescopes provided and manned by volunteers. On our tour we viewed Saturn, Mars, deep space star nurseries, Nebula and the edge of our galaxy. Our 5 year old grand-daughter was so enthralled with this experience she could not stop talking about the visit and wanted to call everyone and tell them what she had just seen. There is no better value or educational activity in Sun River...this is truly a "do not miss" opportunity to explore the stars. Do wear a light jacket, bring some bug repellant and prepare yourself for a WOW experience.

“Favorite activity at Sun River”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2012

At Sun River, we hiked, biked, rode horses, swam, floated down rivers, walked, played tennis, fished and went to the Oregon Observatory. When I asked my four year old son what was his favorite part of our vacation, he said he enjoyed the "telescopes" the best. Even a four year old can grasp what an unusual treat it is to see Saturn, Mars, moons etc.

“Millions of dollars at your disposal for only $6”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2012 via mobile

Come to the evening program and you can use equipment costing millions of dollars. See the best that naked-eye observing has to offer and either despair that it looks nothing like the photos or be amazed by seeing it yourself. Be sure to go out behind the area with all the floor-mounted telescopes to a more casual area with smaller scopes. Ask questions! See what you want to see merely by expressing an interest.

For your comfort, be sure to bring a warm jacket and bug repellent. It gets cold at night, even in the summer!

“Travel trillions of miles away for just $6!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2012

We just got home from an evening at the Oregon Observatory at the Sunriver Nature Center. We are visiting the Bend area as a candidate place to relocate in a few years. One thing I want, as an amateur astronomer, is to get out from under the light-polluted skies of SoCal. The skies at the Oregon Observatory are like a breath of fresh air! The Observatory had the dome open with their big telescope operating; then they had 5 more 'scopes out in the wide-open roll-off roof viewing area, and then several smaller scopes outside. There was a staff member stationed at each scope to point it at a variety of fascinating astronomical objects and to answer questions about them. Kids as young as 4 or 5 had no trouble staying up until 11 pm. And it's always fun to sit back and watch the reaction of people the first time they see Saturn with its rings in the eyepiece. Where else can you travel to distant galaxies, trillions of miles away, for just $6?

“Don't miss it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2012

After many visits to Sunriver over the years we finally went to the evening Observatory Show. Very worthwhile and we won't miss it on our next visit. Great for adults and children alike. We saw several galaxies and nebula as well as Saturn, Mercury, Mars and a binary star system. Very friendly and helpful staff, eager to answer questions. Thanks for a great experience!
