“Best Little Secret On The Northern Oregon Coast!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2010

My husband and I have visited the northern Oregon Coast for many years and have stayed in some nice little places as well as some not so nice little places. We are partial to staying in the smaller places due to the prices. The lower the price, the longer we get to stay. But a couple of years ago we stumbled across the Sandy Cove Inn in Seaside, Oregon (Avenue U) and we no longer want to stay anywhere else! The owners are some of the neatest & friendliest people we've ever met. It is family owned and they have made us feel like family as well. Each room has it's own clever theme and are always well kept. The staff is fabulous -- friendly and trustworthy to a fault. Even the parking lot is always spotless! Located on the quiet end of town, a block and a half from the beach, with a "mom & pop" grocery store and a restaurant across the street, there's nothing more to want for. To Steve, Ann, Mike, Betsy & the girls, we are so grateful to have found you and hope to see you many more times in the future! Danny & Vicky

I have actually stayed at the Sandy Cove Inn a couple of times now, previously with my wife, and again this summer with some of our friends. Don't think of this place as a 'motel' and let whatever images come into your mind influence you - think of this spot as a boutique venue, more like a european, custom-designed & quaint guesthouse - but yet still a motel in terms of ease of access etc! It is very sweet, unique and the staff are super friendly and helpful.

This is just steps from the ocean-shore, ideal for beachside bonfires into the late hours - bring your s'mores and get ready for a delightful & affordable stay!

The price was nice, but I don't need to say "nice for the price"! While very affordable, the room-bed and brkfast-was updated and clean. Also the walls seemed fairly thick as neighbor's noises were muted, so we slept well which is always a plus on vacation! The room was small, but has a table with chairs which was great! The only issue was there was no microwave until I snuck one later-guiltily, then told our room attendant I saw afterwards!(offering at check in would have been better). In addition the really neat looking chandalier had no switch but has to be unplugged from behind the table-a pain.
FYI It is a pretty good walk to downtown-it's on the end of the promenade-but it's okay if you don't mind walking a ways. Unfortunately my child became sick on the trip so the walk was not a leisurely one. The hotel touts about the "family friendly" restaurant across the street-avoid that if you have kids- the only thing my child would have eaten was "out" two days in a row. The menu is not family friendly-I especially know this as I have worked in the restaurant business for over 20 years...I would call it pub food, mostly of the spicy sort. There is a market across the street, however, that brings back memories of an age gone by of great service, shiny floors, and variety(for the size!). I wished we had a kitchenette (already taken) as the little meat dept. had some fabulous looking steaks. Last note: another thing we liked about shady cove was the basic-non interruptive service. They were accesible if we needed, but we weren't bothered (I don't want cookies, etc.!) And we appreciated their free classic video selection, Mr. Holland's Opus was perfect to watch as our daughter just started band this year! Thank You

Room was quaint. Asked for a first floor room upon check in, was told they are all saved for guests w/pets. My husband has back problems and would have preferred to not climb stairs, we were then offered a larger room at a higher price, we declined. When we returned after first night stay the room was not cleaned, the garbage was not dumped, the coffee maker was not cleaned and that mornings coffee cup was still on top of the fridge with coffee in the bottom of it. I would not recommend this facility to anyone else due to the cleaning staff.

This place is far nicer than most of the hotels in Seaside. It is 2 blocks from the southern end of the promenade. It is about 3 blocks from the beach and the beach nearby is never crowded. It is about a 10 minute walk to the main street and it is a scenic route at that.

This is an absolutely fantastic, family run hotel within about a two minute walk from the beach. We booked our two night stay directly through the hotel's website and received a confirmation about two hours after submitting the request.

Upon arrival, there was a sign at the desk indicating that the person on shift had stepped away and we should use the phone at the entrance to call for service. After calling, we relaxed in the small, quaint lobby and enjoyed free coffee and tea. The lobby has an old piano and comfortable furniture that you would expect to find in someone's living room and there is also an assortment of old movies on VHS that are free to borrow for use in the in-room VCR's.

A gentleman arrived within a couple minutes and checked us in. He took some time to chat with us about where we were from and told us the hotel is owned and run by his family. He made a couple of recommendations for places to get a nice dinner in town and also gave us a printed copy of his personal picks for restaurants in Seaside, Cannon Beach, and Astoria - picks were in categories such as "best burger in town" and "best place to take a date".

As per previous reviews, all the rooms are uniquely decorated theme rooms and we were assigned to the "vintage game room" on the second floor. There is an ice machine and vending machine at the bottom of the outdoor stairs to the top level. The room itself was really funky - the walls were decorated with "old school" games such as Clue, Chinese Checkers, Parcheesi, and Croquet. There was a small table with the top painted like a checker board and the shelving units held items like wooden cars and trains as well as baseball paraphernalia. There was a coffee machine and small fridge (with freezer) in the room and the sink was outside the bathroom and had a very large counter space. The nice thing about the bathroom here was that we got excellent water pressure from the shower....no horrible low pressure "water saving" shower heads like you get in most hotels. The bed was very comfortable and we slept well, especially since the ocean surf could be clearly heard with the window open even from a couple blocks away.

In terms of location, the hotel is in a quiet area at the south end of the promenade that runs along the beach. There is a restaurant across the street and a "mom & pop" grocery store that we were told has been there for quite a long time. The walk to downtown Seaside along the promenade is about one mile and takes roughly 15 minutes...it's an enjoyable walk past beautiful beach houses and hotels on one side and beach along the other and the promenade is well lit at night.

All in all, the Sandy Cove Inn is excellent value for the price, it's well maintained and there was a personal touch that would make you want to come back again.
