“Loved the Personal attention”
Reviewed August 6, 2007

We planned a family vacation to Oregon and Washington to visit some of my family for our 35th anniversary. With a total of 6 people (traveling from Indiana) I wanted to plan hotels roooms ahead of time. Everyone wanted to stay a night at the beach and I remember going to Seaside as a child growing up in Oregon. I found the Hillcrest Inn on Tripadvisor and must say our stay was absolutely perfect.

The rooms were clean (even smelled clean) and the look and feel of the property can only be described as "charming". The grounds are beautiful with the shrubs and flowers and it is only one block from the beach with close access the the main street of shops. We had a wonderful time - the only complaint we had was that we didn't have enough time on our vacation to stay additional nights.

Plus on arrival there was a bottle of sparkling cider and champagne glasses filled with Hershey Kisses in our room- try to find that kind of personal attention at a big chain hotel.

I hope we can make it back to the Hillcrest Inn again some day.

We stayed last week for one night at the Seaside Inn. I have been using TripAdvisor to select hotels for a year, and this is the biggest mistake I've made. I didn't look inside any other hotels while I was there, but if this hotel is the best in Seaside, I won't be going back. We had a Columbia room, which looks like any other generic hotel room from the 1970s-80s. We were offered packaged cookies for snack and breakfast, nothing special. We were on the end room next to the stairs, so there was lots of noise. The people next to us partied until midnight, and kept us up. The next morning I woke up smelling cigarette smoke and had a splitting headache. My husband, son and I are asthmatic, and we all got sick from our night at the Hillcrest Inn. The smoke got piped in through the vent system from our next door neighbors. We spent the next 48 hours feeling miserable.

I got in the shower in the morning to try to clear my head from all the cigarette smoke, and the shower went ice cold after a few minutes, then burning hot in another few minutes. I burned my foot in the shower. My husband had the same experience with the shower going cold but got out before burning himself.

When I told the front desk manager about all our issues upon checking out, she just urged us to give it another try. No thanks, I don't think I'll be experimenting with inhaling second hand smoke all night for a while. I really expected her to at least have the manager call and apologize, but we haven't heard a word from them.

We stayed at 7 other hotels on our trip, and this was hands down the worst. The other hotels were things like Holiday Inn Express & Hilton Garden hotels, so nothing fancy. When we travel, we look for clean, safe (including not bad for our health), and economical. This place was reasonably clean, but not too healthy or economical. If you're looking to smoke & party, I would recommend this place, but not for any other reason.

First, we apologize deeply to our guests who visited us from California and who had such a difficult time with their one-night stay with us in Seaside. Nobody wants to stay in a motel room where there is party noise and secondhand smoke coming from surrounding rooms. We, too, find the situation completely unacceptable. We, the Hillcrest Inn management team, are here to ensure that our guests have a comfortable, enjoyable stay. Our Front Desk Manager lives on site and is here to handle difficult situations. When our guests check in they are informed that smoking is not allowed in any of the rooms and they sign a check-in form that says they will not smoke in any Hillcrest Inn rooms; if we are made aware of guests who are not abiding by the "no-smoking rule" they will be asked to leave the Hillcrest Inn. In this case when the California guests checked out and then told us about their situation, we immediately told the offending guests that they could no longer stay for a second reserved night. We would have reacted sooner if we had known sooner. Regarding the hot/cold shower, we had not been made aware by any of our guests that such a problem had been occurring. That morning after hearing about the problem we called in our plumber to check out our hot water heaters to correct any deficiencies. We do not defer maintenance issues and we take a strong position to enforce the rules we have in place. If any of our future guests are reading this comment and plan on staying with us, we strongly encourage you to let us know during your stay how we can make your visit at the Hillcrest Inn all that you hope it will be. We emphasize customer service - you, the guest, are our number 1 priority.
Again, let me say how sad we are that the guests from California left our inn displeased; however, we are pleased that they took the time to write a comment that helps us be better innkeepers.
Jay Lieberman,
General Manager

Our group of 13 stayed at the Hillcrest House. The house has 6 bedrooms with a total of 8 queen size beds. It's very roomy (bigger than it appears on the website). We never felt cramped at all. There was a large sunroom, large living room, large dining room and large eat-in kitchen. The back deck had 2 BBQs. The kitchen was fully equipped with 2 refrigerators, 2 toasters, blender, coffee maker, microwave, dishwasher, pots, pans, utensils, etc. The location was excellent. There's no view of the ocean, but the beach and boardwalk were only about a block away. It's right across the street from the Aquarium and only about 2 blocks from the shops and restaurants of Seaside. The house is not fancy, but was clean and met our needs. We would stay here again.

  • Liked — Great location and large space.
  • Disliked — No view or pool/hot tub.

The staff at the Hillcrest Inn were so wonderful. They were ever so welcoming! They were excited to meet us when we arrived. Offered to take a family photo for us. Offered us prepackaged cookies/snacks and coffee at check in and informed us that their would be pastrys and coffee as well in the morning. They even showed us to our room, such service! The price of our room was a steal! The room itself was very clean, cozy and comfortable. We had a suite with a kitchen/dinning room, seprate living room (which was great because we put the kids to bed and watched TV without disturbing them), and a seprate bedroom with 2 big beds. The linens were clean and there was lots of extra pillow and blankets in the closet. The bathroom was very clean, with complimentry hebal essence samples and in room coffee too. It is located 1 block from the boardwalk, 1 block from the main drag with rides, resturants, and shops. 1 block to a famous seafood resturant. 1 block to the aquarium too. Lots of free parking. They have a sauna as well but we didn't get a chance to try it out.It was so quiet and relaxing. We felt so at home we didn't want to leave. You will love it.

Jay, JoAnn and Charles at the Hillcrest went out of their way to make
our daughter's birthday trip to the coast special. Our daughter's room was a mini-suite with the bed in a separate area from a cozy sitting room entryway, and had a view of the ocean. JoAnn accommodated our request to make a room change at the last minute, and provided us with personal service with everything from good restaurant suggestions (Norma's 1 block away is great!) to whipped cream in our hot chocolate. They also have both outside parking (although limited), and covered parking. As others have said, the location is convenient to Seaside's attractions. We have stayed here before, and will do so again whenever we are in Seaside.

The Hillside was a perfect answer of how to spend several days with our toddler grandson and his parents. It was safe, roomy, and close to the beach and shops. We could fit our fun around his naps and not feel cabin fever. The cottage with the large family room was perfect. The bedrooms were fine and one even had room for the toddler's pack-n-play. Our only complaint was the size of the bathroom. If I weighed any more I would not have been able to fit between the door and the vanity to get to the tub.
The managers could not have been nicer. The kitchen and bath were well stocked and even a firelog for each day was included. We would like to go again and try the large house to take on all our family of 14.
