In the tiny hamlet of Seal Rock (between Waldport and Newport on the central Oregon coast) is this unexpected find... a Japanese restaurant with sushi quality seafood and other dishes that rival those of Japanese restaurants in Portland and elsewhere. The sushi itself is wonderfully fresh and generously portioned, while the cooked seafood is awesome and unique... any of the specialties (like hamachi collars) are always a treat. The maitake mushrooms are far more flavorful than standard shitakes, the tempura combinations with either seafood, chicken or beef are always great, with fantastic house-made sauces. Their salad dressing itself is really tasty, and available in take home bottles for those who wish to bring some Yuzen home with them. After eating here many dozens of times over the years, I highly recommend this restaurant. Located at the south end of Seal Rock, near the state park, Yuzen has no real signage saying the name Yuzen, however the building has a distinct Japanese influence to its architecture so you shouldn't have any trouble finding it. One word of caution however... if the bumpy gravel parking lot is filled with cars, as it can be some nights, be prepared for a bit of a wait, as the kitchen and sushi bar are pumping out the food as fast as they can, but the complexity and diversity of hot and cold dishes can sometimes make the service seem slow. But it will be worth your time. And on the off-nights when they aren't so busy, the food comes out at a surprisingly quick pace, so if you are hungry for something out of the ordinary in a tiny little town where you'd least expect it, this is the place.
