“Excellent menu”
Reviewed March 4, 2012

Excellent menu and bar. Quite noisy and difficult to hear. PS: If you have a gift card, you cannot use it if you are even one day over....happened to us. Purchased as a Xmas gift on 12/22 and couldn't use it for my son's birthday the next 12/23!

Thank mozecuse

“Best Meal We've Had in Salem”
Reviewed January 26, 2012

We celebrated a family dinner at Salem's Ristorante Davinci last night and it was a better meal than we've had in Salem in a long time. The ambiance of the place is cozy and traditional, with old brick walls, high ceilings, and several stunning stained glass pieces that were probably salvaged from area churches. We were greeted with a plate-sized flatbread still hot from a wood-fired oven and a dish of savory herbed olive oil--a very nice touch. The Caesar salad was an excellent combination of crisp romaine, a generous amount of coarsely grated Parmesan, and just the right amount of garlic in the tangy dressing. The diver's scallops were huge and perfectly seared, presented on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes laced with the sweetest corn kernels ever and sprinkled with meaty bacon squares, surrounded with a subtly rich sauce. The hanger steak, also nested on mashed potatoes, was dressed with a superb reduction sauce with balsamic vinegar and Gorgonzola cheese, and the kitchen understood "medium rare." The wine list is not extensive but adequate in variety and price options.
We'd probably give this place 5 stars except for 2 things, the high noise level and the use of non-traditional flavors for a place that bills itself as a Ristorante. Note to management: Add some carpets, drapes, and tablecloths to dampen the noise and warn us about cilantro garnishes (that's NOT Italian!) and we'd love to return to try more of the delicious-sounding offerings on your menu.

“If we need to ask for separate bills, then offer it...”
Reviewed December 21, 2011

A group of us went out for drinks--just drinks--after work on a week night. We were there about 2 hours and spent $120 just in drinks. By the time we were going to leave the place was pretty empty as it was close to closing. We ask for separate bills. There were some couples so it wouldn't have been a big deal, but we were basically yelled at and told that we needed to ask for that up front and that we would need to work it out within our group. Of course everyone just had $20s but we threw in what we had and asked that the remainder but changed to a credit card. Instead she brought us back a ton of change in $5s and $1s. No of us liked getting scolded and all agreed that she could have offered separate bills up front. Oh well, luckily I had cash so mine wasn't much but after being yelled at it was hard to want to give much of a tip.

PS They need to have bathrooms that don't require you to go outside and to use a code. Crazy for such a fancy restaurant!

“Nice Italian restaurant”
Reviewed December 8, 2011

DaVinci's is a nice restaurant in downtown Salem, next door to the historic Elsinore Theater. The ambience is nice, but a little too noisy. The wait staff are pleasant and professional. The food is good, but not exceptional.
