Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Oregon's oldest estate winery and the birthplace of Oregon Pinot Noir. In 2014 HillCrest was recognized by the state of Oregon and in Vienna, Austria for its global contributions to the world of fine wine. In 2003 the DeMara family, with over 36 years of winemaking and grape growing around the world, took over from the Father of Oregon wine and HillCrest founder Richard Sommer. Today they specialize in classic European varieties from France, Spain and Germany crafted using the very best of old world techniques. These include the use of patented concrete fermentors for reds, extended ageing of 2-7 years and dry farming. The DeMaras invite you to taste in their tasting room which is opened every day of the year minus the big 4 holidays. There is usually a selection of 8-9 wines that are available for tasting with many more wines for sale from the wineries library. These wines are only sold here at the winery.

“Best Winery in the Umqua Valley”
Reviewed April 10, 2012

Actually Hillcrest is my favorite winery period. The winemaker/owner Dyson is the most knowledgeable winemaker I have ever talked to and it is always a pleasure to hear him talk about his experience and his passion for winemaking. He is a down to earth guy just like his wife Susan. The place is low key and relaxed. It you want a fancy/snooty winery this is not your place. If you want the best wine ever this is your place. Hillcrest is more about making great wine than selling you wine. Each wine has a story and a reason for existing. Dyson doesn't make any wine just because he needed in his product line up.

“Good Winery in Lovely Rural Location”
Reviewed March 26, 2012

This is a nice family-run Artisan winery in a beautiful rural location. During our visit, there was a bachelorette group which didn't provide much room to taste the wines being offered. HillCrest has outside seating too, also a winery dog wandering the premises!

“Amazing wines”
Reviewed March 12, 2012

This winery was hands down the star of an Oregon wine trip my wife and I took last year. The woman conducting the tasting was a local food and wine writer who was super friendly and thrilled to talk about the winemaker's techniques, inspiration and food pairings. The wines were the best we tasted on our trip. I later ordered two bottles of their Right Bank wine for my wife for Christmas. She was thrilled and it tasted everybit as good at home in Pennsylvania as it did in their lovely tasting room in the Umpqua Valley.
