My husband and I take at least two trips a year to Portland to visit Powell's and this is a great location because we can walk there. It is also close to Whole Foods, PF Chang's, Anthropologie, Lucy and more.

It is an older hotel but our rooms have always been very clean. I think all the rooms have kitchens (the appliances crack me up - very tiny). We usually just use the fridge and the kettle. The breakfast is included but nothing special (cereal, toast, fruit, pastries - the basics). They are currently renovating. The staff is very courteous. We received a copy of the NY Times each morning.

I have found the best prices on their own website or Portland the big deal site.

My husband and I stayed with friends at the Mark Spencer on a Sunday night after a wedding in wine country.
The hotel's location was great. We had been told to hit the Pearl District since we had such a short amount of time. We walked to the Rogue Brewery, a great Peruvian restaurant and finally to a "late night" McMinniman's bar.
We didn't spend much time in the hotel. But, it was clean. The windows were new and the airconditioning was great since it was incredibly hot that evening. The kitchenette was odd as it had a full-sized refrigerator - but, it may have been useful for a longer stay. The bed was comfortable. The room was small, but had all the necessary items and two closets.
Overall, it was a nice - quick - stay.

there's no vanity in the bathrooom, just a 4 inch shelf. There's peeling paint in the window sills and an inexplicable (purposeful) square hole in the draperies that lets the morning in way too soon. Breakfast was mediocre at best. Don't even bother with the tea time.

On the upswing, the service was great and the beds had nice linens.

I stayed at the Mark Spencer Hotel on a Friday night in downtown Portland, and it was perfect! I would definitely recommend this place. Great location, and so affordable!

The Mark Spencer is located on the edge of downtown Portland's fareless zone. It is an older 6-story hotel only one block from famous Powell's bookstore and emerging yuppie Pearl District. The suite comes with kitchenette, sofabed and private bedroom, free continental breakfast and afternoon tea. Air conditioning is a welcome amenity during rare Portland heat waves. Public transportation is inexpensive, frequent and super effortless.

We were very pleased with the Mark Spencer. The room was comfortable - not huge but we had plenty of space. The kitchenette was great. We especially loved the downtown location - just a few blocks from the Pearl District and the river front. We would certainly stay there again.

At around 8 in the morning, woke to pounding on one of my walls. Tried to sleep through it, but eventually got up. It was a Monday morning, so I suppose they thought no one would still be sleeping - but I was in town specifically for a Sunday night concert. Please check your records before either putting me in the room or scheduling the construction. One or the other!
