We checked in late at night after a very long train ride, and we were tired and grumpy. The two staff at the desk could not have been more welcoming -- not only the young man who hurried away to find us a plate of cookies, but the young woman next to him who was enthusiastically describing sightseeing options to a couple of other travelers. Both desk staff were warm, helpful, and brimming with enthusiasm for Portland. I wish that all hotels could understand what a huge difference this first impression makes for travelers!
We found the hotel charming overall. Our room (junior queen suite) was very clean and spacious, and the linens are fabulous! As others have commented, the location is ideal and the teatime and wine reception are very nice amenities. The continental breakfast could use improvement to bring it up to the standard of the rest of the hotel. The offerings were quite average and the serving and eating area need more constant attention during breakfast hours so that guests don't find themselves sitting down to a dirty table.
We enjoyed our stay and would certainly return.More
