My wife and I stayed at RiverPlace Sept. 7 thru 13 as a birthday trip. Cheerful staff greeted us upon an early morning arrival and held our bags for a short time as they put a priority on our 4th floor river view room to be cleaned. Our spacious room provided a spectacular view of the river and the boat dock. To our surprise, staff provided a complementary birthday tray, including a bottle of wine, assorted cheeses, chocolates, and fruit. This surprise was unexpected and wonderful! The room and bath was modern, well lit, and exceptionally clean. This is a pet friendly hotel, but noting in our room gave us a clue that pets had stayed there. Staff informed us of the daily wine hour where complimentary wines are poured, snacks are served, and you can mingle with other guests off the main lobby area. One day included live music. Staff and neighboring rooms were very quiet during our stay (no slamming doors or noisy housekeeping) It is truly one quietest hotels we have ever stayed at.

Service was exceptional during our stay. Desk staff was always friendly and helpful (even had hairspray my wife needed one day). Hotel bikes are available for use in this bike friendly town. Rocking chairs are available and overlooking a large grassy expanse near the river. You can order a drink or bring your own, and relax. Staff are available near the door, eager to get you anything you need, including a cab. The river walk is just outside the entry opposite the street side and allows for morning walks as joggers and bikes stream by. Shops and bistros are in one direction, a walk to Portland proper is the other direction. We had breakfast at the hotel restaurant overlooking the river and we also tried the "Little River Cafe" near the hotel, so it's nice to have this variety.

We had read prior TA reviews before we booked RiverPlace, and noted some guests were bothered by noises at night from trains and traffic. We are not light sleepers, so outside noises did not wake us. Having arrived in Portland from the east coast, we noted the first night that train horns are heard across the river at random times. Also, a major highway fly-over is far downstream from the hotel view.

In regards to another TA comment, we arrived on the first day of annual Dragon Boat races on the river. The large grassy area next to the hotel was packed with boat race team tents and hundreds of people. If your stay is during this event be prepared for a PA system of speakers, people cheering, and a drum beat to set the rowing rhythm. Check with the hotel before you book, as this activity occupies the entire area near the one side of hotel and races start at 8 am, running till dusk. We found the races to be very entertaining, but then again, this activity is by no means associated with the hotel.

I'll wrap up by saying we loved this hotel so much that we have looked into staying at Kimpton hotels in NYC. We look forward to staying at RiverPlace again.

Room Tip: River view rooms are great. But if you are a light sleeper or want to sleep with the windows open at night, then maybe you might not want to choose the river view side of this fantastic hotel.

We stayed here recently over a long weekend with my elderly mother and sister for a mother daughter weekend. Our flight had been delayed, so we didn't arrive till after midnight. The clerk on staff greeted us by name and with a smile, saying that they had been expecting us. What a nice way to start our visit! That was how the staff was the rest of our visit. Always pleasant to deal with. We flew Southwest Airlines and were going to be out during the day sightseeing when we needed to on-line check in. No problem, the desk took care of that for us, and when we arrived at the end of our day - had our boarding passes printed out and ready. Now that's good old customer service, which is hard to find these days. Our room was clean, quiet, and a beautiful view of the river. We had room 404, and it was perfect. There is a nice, clean, safe waterfront walk with coffee shops, restaurants that we could walk to. The sport club that is free to use for hotel guests is a short 5 minute walk - and is a nice club. We did try to make spa reservations there and had been told they took walk ins, but when we tried calling them there was no answer; and when we went in person they said there were no therapists there?!? We tried next door to the hotel at a day spa, and they were very accommodating. A nice touch was the cominentary wine/beer tasting hour in the late afternoon. A nice touch and welcome after a full day. I highly reccommend this nice gem of a hotel.

Your statement that good old customer service is so hard to find these days is so true and so sad. Smiles can go along ways. Great review. Thanks.

My husband and I spent a quick weekend in Portland. We were both very impressed with the cheerful, friendly staff who was eager to assist us with every detail of our weekend. The location of RiverPlace is perfect; close to everything downtown has to offer, but not right in the middle of the city. Our room was very comfortable with a beautiful river view! When we go back to Portland, we will only stay at the RiverPlace,

We had a wonderful weekend stay at the RiverPlace hotel. The location is great, within walking distance of everything downtown Portland has to offer. Our room had a beautiful view of the Portland waterfront, from which we could enjoy the fall colors. The staff was super friendly. Guests have complementary access to the neighboring RiverPlace Athletic Club, with its great workout facilities.

Portland has a lot of great hotel choices -- including another terrific Kimpton property, the Monaco -- but we always come back to RiverPlace. The location is about perfect for walking anywhere in the central core of the city, and it's convenient if you need to drive someplace, too. The views are tough to beat, the bar and restaurant are quiet and charming, and the staff is friendly and attentive. Amenities are terrific. The rooms are so comfortable you never want to leave -- great decor, spotlessly clean, and so ideal for hanging out that sometimes you feel OK about skipping some of the embarrassment of riches Portland has to offer so you can just relax at home.

Room Tip: We've always stayed on the river side, on a few different floors and in different locations, and it's always quiet and pleasant.

Hey there is nothing wrong with simply just hanging out at our hotel and restaurant and letting the world pass you by. Thanks for being such a loyal Kimpton fan here in Portland!
