“Old and Tired Doesn't Make It”
Reviewed May 15, 2009

Unlike most of the other La Quinta's we've been in, this is an old and tired properety that La Quinta obviously took over (and shouldn't have put their name on). Dingy stairs to the elevator only portend what's coming. The rooms are as clean as they can be but they creak. Shower water temperature goes up and down. And they need a security guard at night. Also the breakfast room is desultory, plus they ran out of eggs an hour before closing on both mornings of our stay. Find someplace else.

This is generally the least expensive hotel near the convention center. The hotel is an old courtyard hotel that has some paint and new furniture. It is in serious need of a complete renovation. It is not your usual new LaQuinta. They try to keep it clean and generally it is, but at the edges - where the old grout meets the crooked wall, it is impossible. People are nice, breakfast is usual. Location is good.

My rate was $99/night and I wouldn't pay much more. On the plus side, it is about 2 short blocks from the rail and 3 blocks from the convention center. The room was good size and clean and the bed comfortable. The staff was friendly and the breakfast was good (waffles, cereal, fruit, bagels). The fitness center is a room w 2 good treadmills and a elliptical. The pool seemed to be popular w/families w/kids. They have a computer w/printer but see below...
On the negative side, the hotel is quite outdated in appearance. The doors need painting and the carpet looks cheap and old. I didn't hear any room to room noise but I could hear EVERYTHING in the hallway. If people were talking it sounded like they were meeting right outside my door. The wireless internet was a bit problematic - connection speeds varied from 54 at start but would drop significantly (often down to 2, right now I am using it at 36 Mbps). The lobby computer is good if you have to print something out or need to get online. However, the only other software installed is MS Works and Word so if you have an Excel spreadsheet you wanted to print (as I did) you have to put it in works or do some other tricks. There is a Kinkos about 5 blocks away.

This place is just rather average. It's very close to the convention center, and I booked about 5 months in advance and got a $62/night rate, compared to +$100 for other people I know who booked in the area. I had to call the property before arriving - one person hung up one right after blurting out the answer to my question; another employee was cordial and kind. Beware of the amenities: the indoor pool had a certain horror-movie quality about it, the fitness room was a couple of treadmills, and the wifi was spotty (I had to stay on my bed for it to work). The breakfast was typical La Quinta, which is to say a step above many other places, but there was a severe lack of fruit. Not everyone wants three day's worth of carbs for breakfast. The interior hallways were a little dinged up - some odd holes there tht five minutes of patching would have fixed. The room was clean and spacious, with lots of outlets spread around. Definitely one of the cleaner motel bathrooms i've seen. The bed was too soft for me - once settled in, movement was not much of an option. And in classic motel/hotel way, the bed was short for me - and i'm 6'0. Traffic along MLK Blvd can get a little loud, especially around rush hour. Nearby dining options are fairly limited. It *is* a La Quinta, so there' a Denny's across the street, as well as a Red Robin. Starbucks is nearby for the caffiene addicts.
I'd stay here again - but i'd also see if I could find another place for the price, but I doubt I would.

I enjoyed my stay at the Portland La Quinta Inn near the Convention Center. The staff was wonderful. They were friendly and helpful at the counter. They went beyond the call of duty and even delivered a fax from my niece to my room twice!

The staff members who were responsible for cleaning the rooms did an awesome job. The room was always spotless when I returned from a long day at the conference - and there was always candy on the night stand.

The amenities were appreciated. It was very convenient to have a refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker in the room. I didn't use the exercise room, but noticed others were making use of the equipment.

The dining area was great! The breakfast food was good and the dining room was tidy and welcoming, with the smell of fresh waffles cooking on the griddle. The gentleman in the dining area was friendly.

La Quinta Portland Convention Center had the best rates around, with great amenities and a wonderful staff.

  • Liked — Great amenities. Great service. Very close to convention center and public transportation.

This hotel was not worth over $100/night. I was visiting Portland to interview at OHSU and had called ahead to see how far this hotel was from OHSU - I was told "a few blocks" but that turned out to be a 15 minute drive. The staff tries to be friendly but they are not helpful - one lady told me to catch the city bus on the wrong side of the street, nearly sending me on a wild goose chased and making me miss my interview. Although it's convenient that the hotel is located just a block from a light rail stop, the whole room shakes mildly whenever a train goes by. Fortunately, this did not disturb my sleep but I would caution light sleepers. Also, the heated pool and breakfast room are not accessible from the hotel rooms so you'd have to walk outside to get to them. The shower is a stand-up shower only without a bath tub. There are lots of convenience stores/fast food places nearby. Overall, this hotel is sufficient for a one night stay but definitely not worth over $100/night. You definitely need a car unless you're sure your destination is close by.

I had booked a 5-night stay to attend a conference at the nearby Convention Center. The best thing about this hotel is the location, close to MAX trains, buses, etc. However, the facility is outdated, looking like it had not been updated since the 50s. When I checked in, the closet had a strange smell. They should have checked for these kinds of things before the guests arrive. The carpet may need to be shampooed. I walked around in white socks, and the soles turned grey.

  • Liked — value and location
  • Disliked — dirty carpets, smell in closet and hallways, old theadbare beddings, cigarett butt burns in bathroom
