It's odd how some cuisines end up swarming a city and it seems Portland is a beehive of Thai.
It becomes hard to decide at times on where to go but when you pick a place, such as Mai Thai in SE Portland, you find a connection to the culture not just food.
Thailand, known as the Land of Smiles, makes a fine show in Mai Thai
Hard to find at times in restaurants, the whole, bone in, wok fried Herb Fish in Three Flavor sauce displays proudly and is a fun sweet-spicy and sticky one to eat.
Look for specials! You won't be dissapointed as the cooks at Mai Thai show off their knowledge of the streets Bangkok.
Seasonal items such as Mango Posee with mixed seafood are excellent as is infrequently seen Mee Krob.
Can ya handle the heat???
Curries and soups stun with complexity. Go ahead and ask for these "Phet Maak", they know what their doing with the nuclear "Prik Nue" Thai chilies without drowning out the full palate of salty, sweet, sour and tart flavors. Massamun, a seemingly basic Muslim-style yellow curry, amazes. Showing off the the kitchens talents at exploring outside Bangkok to Southern Thailand.
Finally, it seems often, when it comes to noodles expectations are hard met in Thai restaurants. Often too greasy, bland, a gloppy mess...I dare to say Phad Thai or Drunken Noodles will leave you wondering why you haven't tried these dishes elsewhere.
When you take the time and enjoy the Bangkok and other influences at Mai Thai you will hopefully find yourself striking up a friendly conversation with the staff while sipping a cold Bia Chang or fruity/
earthy Matuum Tea and fall into their delicious and seemingly simple desserts...Mango and sticky rice? C'mon anyone can do this... right?
Sure doesn't seem that way...except here at Mai Thai.
Oh yea, they deliver too.
