“Number one for a reason”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2007

We stayed at the Portland White House for three nights while on our honeymoon in Portland. From booking to arrival to departure, our experience was top notch. The breakfasts are amazingly delicious, and the service was comprehensive. The ratings on Tripadvisor rank this B&B as number one, and we think it's deserving. The friendly and helpful owner and staff made our stay even more enjoyable. We were welcomed as familiar friends.

Bonuses: Rooms are as lovely as they seem from website photos, very clean, lots of help and advise on places to go in Portland, close enough to downtown to take public transportation, wonderful staff, great breakfasts, accommodating with arrival/departure times, cute shopping neighborhood within walking distance of B&B.

Icing on the cake: When owner Lanning learned we were honeymooners, he offered us a complimentary upgrade to the Baron's suite with a king bed and luxurious bath. Staff members took us with our luggage to the MAX lightrail station for airport departure, which was helpful since we didn't rent a car; it saved us a taxi fare to the airport. Extra bacon graciously given upon request. :)

Noteworthy observations: We stayed in the Blarney on our first night; don't let its size deter you from booking. The decor was pleasant and the room was cozy.

Oops: Forgot to take photos of rooms. See Portland's White House website for those. The rooms were consistent with the photos of the lobby/dinning/resting areas.

I had an extended stay at Portland's Whitehouse - almost two weeks (for a business trip). The house is amazing and the owners (and staff) were very helpful and friendly. The breakfasts were great. As a long-stay guest I had the "Garden room" - not on the website - but it is great. Not large, but very elegant, and with its own balcony. The location is good - handy to lots of restaurants.

If you are staying in Portland, you simply must stay at the Portland's Whitehouse (see the photos).

While visiting friends in Portland, we stayed at the White House. This old restored hotel has rooms which are large and well furnished; our bathroom was also large but had almost no counter space for setting toiletries such as shaving gear or makeup. The first floor is furnished with a collection of very nice antiques and is almost like visiting a museum. Lanning, the owner, is an outgoing and energetic host who prepares an excellent breakfast which is served in the attractive dining room. The property is conveniently located on a quiet street in an old residential neighborhood with well-kept private homes on tree lined streets. The only downside we noted was vehicle parking for guests which is on one side of the street only; there is no on-site parking available. An attraction worth visiting while in Portland is the 5 acre Japanese Garden which is on a hill overlooking the city (see the attached photos).

We wanted a small, intimate wedding. We met with Lanning and discussed the Sunday morning ceremony with a brunch following. That was it......Lanning did all the rest. We arrived Saturday evening and stayed in the Garden room. Everything was wonderful.....Moonstruck chocolates & to die for homemade cookies were waiting for us in the room. Sunday morning went off without a hitch. Lanning was the perfect planner. He kept everything on schedule. The food was excellent. I would highly recommend Lanning and the Portland White House staff.

Thank you for all your hard work!!!

My boyfriend and I traveled through Portland on a road trip and stayed at this B&B for two nights. First, the property is in a great location. Because it is in a neighborhood and not downtown, we felt like we really got a sense of Portland. Within a block of the B&B, there is a street that serves as the neighborhood’s “downtown” that has great restaurants that are within walking distance.
We also loved our room. Although the Carolina room was smallish, we didn't feel overcrowded at all. The bed was very comfortable, and everything was clean and modern.
Lastly, the innkeepers were wonderful. They were friendly and accommodating, and we really enjoyed chatting with them each morning over a delicious, fresh breakfast.
I highly recommend Portland's White House if you are looking for an authentic experience of Portland and are seeking personal and very comfortable accommodations.

Found the inn at the selectregistry.com website. This inn more than lives up to the promise. Stately former residence uncannily resembles the Presidents Mansion. Gorgeous antiques and artwork. Thoughtful attention to our immediate comfort and a warm welcome from Steve before being led to our suite on the second floor. Wow. This inn has thought of everything down to the chocolate chip cookies awaiting our arrival. Tired and hungry (and thirsty) caused our host to recommend the short drive to McMENAMINS KENNEDY SCHOOL PUB. What a trip! Great pub with fresh ales and the best garlic fries. We hope to return to the Portland White House soon!

From the moment I discovered this B&B on the internet I couldn't wait to arrive. I was not disappointed. It is a beautiful home decorated with priceless antiques. We have stayed in dozens of B&B's accross the US and this is by far the best to date. The Innkeepers - Lanning & Steve - are the friendliest we've met and very helpful when asked for restaurant recommendations. The most comfortable bed we have slept in - truly felt like a princess!! We will definitely be back!!
