I've stayed here several times and each time my stay has been great. Love the rooms, location, etc. But each time, I arrive with my luggage and have to go into battle with the two sets of heavy swing doors in order to get into the lobby.

There's never a doorman to assist and as a solo traveller on business it's a sure-fire way to induce a pre check-in tantrum. And a post check-out meltdown too, because the guy behind the counter is not going to lift a finger. He's waaaay too cool to help out.

We stayed here as a family of five - perhaps not the target clientele, but the staff were very accommodating and we felt comfortable amongst all the hipsters. The kids were so delighted by the giant wall decoration ( a black cat) that they immediately started fighting over the bed that had the best view of it. The whole place has a great feel, adds to the fun of a stay in Portland which is a fantastic city anyway, and made us feel a few decades younger than we really are. Great food downstairs in Clyde Common as well. Highly recommended.

The Ace Hotel was my first stop on a West Coast backpacking trip. I booked two nights mid week (tues, wed).

Hotel Area: The Ace is in a GREAT area, it's very close to everything! It's a train ride from the airport, and very short bus ride from the Amtrak station. It's also walking distance to Portland's popular food carts, Powell's Books, shopping, bars and restaurants.

Hotel: Prior to my trip I read a lot of reviews on here and one of the consistent complaints was the bad service from the hotel staff. I went in expecting really bad service but was surprised, I was greeted at the door by a very polite doorman. The front desk girl was very sweet, she greeted me with a smile and was very polite. There is a Stumptown Coffee in the lobby which is awesome! The guy working there was very helpful and friendly. There is also a restaurant, Clyde Common's next door. On the 2nd Floor there is a small breakfast room, they have boiled eggs, toast, and jams. All of which are homegrown and organic. Breakfast is $10 and they charge it to your room. There's a photo booth in the lobby for a cheap souvenir.

Room: I was in a front double room. The room was a pretty good size and had a window to the street. I could see Powell's Books from my window. Another popular complaint I saw on here was about the noise from the street. Now, yes there is a bar across the street and Clyde Common's downstairs so there is noise from the street. I was there mid week so there was hardly any noise. There is a garbage truck that comes around 6am and it's pretty loud. Now, I am a city person so the noise from the street or the morning trash pick up doesn't bother me or keep me from sleeping but if you're not used to the noise maybe you shouldn't get a front room or use the ear plugs they give you. Also the beds are very firm, I like a firm bed so I didn't mind.

Amenities: They have an ironing board, an iron, really cool robes and laundry service. They don't have a blow dryer though. Plenty of towels, However I noticed that some of the towels although clean had stains on them. The hotel has free wi-fi but since there is a coffee shop in the lobby the internet can be pretty slow during the day due to the coffee drinkers in the lobby. The front desk also has bike for rents.

Overall: The Ace is a great place for young people. Clyde Commons next door has great food and a lively crowd (mostly young people). Don't expect frills and luxury, because you won't find it but it is a very cool place with a great atmosphere.

Room Tip: If you're noise sensitive or a light sleeper ask for a backroom.

The Ace is a popular place for hipsters. It has all the usually hipstery things. Snotty waiters, nutty drink concoctions, odd facial hair, bored looking staff. Overall it's an "ok" hotel. We had a corner room that "slept 4". When we walked in the room we saw one bed and one nasty stained overstuffed couch which turns into a "bed" (this wasn't a fold out couch, just a large L couch). It was quite gross. The only real PRO to this hotel is the location. FANTASTIC location. Skip the Ace. If you want a great Portland experience, stay at The Kennedy School. The McMenamins know how to do "hipster" and local.

A group of us stayed here for three nights. It was a clean comfortable place to stay. The staff was very friendly. Bathrooms were shared with other guests, they were always clean and available when ever I used them. There is a lot of homeless throughout Portland but none approached you. Really have to be willing to try something different than the usual hotel route to really enjoy this place. I am glad we stayed.

I wouldn't stay at this hotel again if you paid me! Had a room in the front of the hotel for a week. Not only can I tell you the garbage man collects everyday between 5-6 am, the recycling pick up is the WORST! There is a bar across the street, homeless shelters abounding, and the bar/restaurant is so busy at all times you can forget a relaxing drink here. The coffee shop attached is busy everyday you can spare yourself the line and go up the road! The fact that they have a shared bathroom for some of the rooms should be a big hint to RUN!!!. For $250 a night, its a def. skip this, and entertain yourself elsewhere.

Room Tip: BACK OF THE HOTEL IF YOU WANT TO SLEEP, but don't think the young ones don't like to party a...

I loved Ace! Quirky, friendly, funky, artistic – daring to be different. With wonderful individually designed bedrooms and bathrooms. And nice firm beds. Yes, in fact: everything is beautifully designed, down to every little detail whether it be the laundry list, menu card or bathroom wallpaper. Also features a great little breakfast room with locally sourced produce – everything you need in the healthiest possible way. Lovely staff too, apart from the odd poseur. I'll definitely want to stay here again!

Room Tip: Front rooms are rather noisy due to the vibrant street-life, so if you need peace to sleep, chose a...
