The property has a great location to attend a seminar at PSU, the area is quiet, safe and peaceful but there's a problem related with connectivity. There's no WiFi in the rooms and your only option is at the lobby to catch, if you're lucky, the PSU WiFi. The property is in general outdated and no family friendly.

The location was perfect for me as I was attending a conference at the university. It is also conveniently close to the center of town. Apart from that, it's pretty bad. My room looked like it had not been updated since the 70s. Gum stuck on the carpet, polyester bedspread, very old-fashioned bathroom, no wi-fi. I would not go back.

We were visiting our friends from Portland state university. So this was the only place which seemed closest and neat ONLINE. So we booked a deluxe double bed room.
When we reach the hotel, they give us such a small room with no wifi instead we had to pull out some cable wire to get wifi. It was so terrible and also had no coffee maker, no microwave and TV was so old-fashioned. The carpets were dirty, suffocating rooms. The funiest part is when other friends of ours booked the same room they actually got a room with wifi and a bigger room with coffe maker and everything. When we ask the front desk as to why they gave us such a small room, they tell us they gave us the wrong room. Instead of the deluxe they gave us the standard. It was soo annoying. This hotel made our vacation one of the most terrible one ! The deluxe room is also not as a deluxe room should be. Its more like the general standard room you would get in other hotels. This hotel is a total nonsense. Please donot opt for this and save yourself for a good trip.

The best thing about this hotel was its location - just to the south of downtown Portland. Breakfast fayre was also pretty good.

But I have three significant negatives to report about our third floor room:-
1) The door was not draught-proof and so the room became very chilly. In the morning you could see daylight creeping in all around the doorway as the outside air continued to rush in.
2) When the lady next door got up early to have her shower we were woken by the noise. We heard her turn on the shower and drop her soap - that is how soundproof the room was.
3) Although I knew about this beforehand, I don't see why guests with cars should have to pay $15 a day for car parking. It is just a rip off and seems more so when I recall that in no other hotel on our North West Pacific holiday journey did we have to pay a car parking fee.

University Place is a big hotel but it is becoming rather dated and needs upgrading if it is to justify its room prices. The TV in our room was chunky old school and so modern oblong TV images were incomplete on the square screen.

We booked through a third party site for this hotel/motel. The room looked old and the furniture looked old too. The air conditioner unit was old and couldn't cool the room enough. The biggest complaint about this place though, was that after we booked it, we get to the hotel and they tell us that it will be $15.00 to park in THEIR parking lot outside our rooms. Ridiculous that it wasn't included in the price of staying in this place. The good thing about this hotel is that it was close to waterfront dining and street cars were right outside our hotel. We should have left the rental car at the airport and taken the railway/street cars to this place. This place did have a full hot breakfast that came with the stay. The rooms face in (courtyard interior), but you should be very aware that you will be there with college students during a lot of the times of the year.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rehabbed rooms.

Clean, well appointed, large room, with comfortable bed. Good facilities. Brilliant proximity to several public transport options giving quick access throughout city for low cost. Access to Avis/Budget hire car also a bonus, providing reasonably priced rental cars with free airport drop off.

Breakfast selection was quite good, with cereal and selection of hot food. Reasonably priced evening meals available at the restaurant.

Would stay again, and already recommended hotel to friends who were staying in higher priced hotels with smaller rooms. Thanks

Room Tip: Chose a room facing rear carpark which was quiet, yet not too far to walk.

First off, I suppose we booked the non-renovated rooms, as our room looked nothing like the pictures that we saw online. We had to walk through a dark and dank hallway to our room, only to find a very dated and tired motel room -- when I checked the bed (we've had an 8 hour train ride to Portland), the pillows and bedding were covered in what looked like both human and dog hair. We called the front desk and told them of the situation, and all they did was bring us two new pilowcases and two new flat sheets, that we had to install ourselves. The heater was loud, and would rattle when it turns on, the bathroom small and uninviting.

The only good we can say is that the hot breakfast was generous, the location is great (we walked downtown), and the staff held our luggage for the day. We knew this is not a luxury hotel, but even for the lower price for a Portland stay, we expected a clean room at the very least. We will look elsewhere next time.

Room Tip: If you ARE going to stay here, do yourself a favour, and ask for one on the renovated rooms.
