“Out of the way and out of the ordinary”

We went on a Wednesday night and had a great time. They have plenty of games to chose from and there beer is excellent. It really is!! But the food is made somewhere else and is warmed up in a microwave; so it's not very fresh or tasty. The staff was friendly, the atmosphere cozy ( they have a fireplace, books everywhere and a piano you can play), and the beer: that's right - EXCELLENT! We left tipsy because we tried at least 3 full-to-the-brim true pints apiece. We stayed for awhile and played cribbage. It wasn't too loud but the bartendress assured us it is never really that busy. The max is a close walk, so is Voodoo donuts. Go! Just go! Just don't go hungry.

“Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2011

This place is tucked in a small side street, an alley almost. The owner is great, greating us when we walked it. He gave us a rundown of the beers available and made suggestions for my less beer-inclined wife to find something she may like. The atmosphere is very laid back and welcoming. I felt like I'd known the owner my entire life after the first 5 minutes there.

We were hoping to go back again our second night in town, but there was a sign on the door saying it was too hot to be open.

“Friendly Portland brewpub”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2011

Tugboat is very much like a British real ale pub. When you come in, go up to the bar and have a chat about what beers they have on today and the sort you like. If Linzel is behind the bar he will be happy to talk through what they've got and make suggestions according to your tastes.
You'll know if Linzel is working as soon as you walk in off the street as you'll get a gregarious welcome.
But once you've got your drinks you can get a table and won't be bothered or you can sit up at the bar and chat. You may even get to take your photo with the resident Emmy (the TV version of an Oscar statue).
Pay by cash rather than credit.
I would definitely recommend this friendly Portland pub with fantastic beer.

“This is an interesting bar. They brew...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2010

This is an interesting bar. They brew their own beer. The IPA is good, and they have a 10% brew that looks good. Their food choices are limited but decent - basically finger/bar food. Come for the beer and atmosphere, not the food. The atmosphere is inviting. They give you a loud "heeeeeey" when you come in, and a loud "booooo" when you leave. It's fun.
