We are visiting Portland and attending a Lions Club leadership conference at the Oregon Convention Center. The organizing committee gave each attendee MAX a ticket good for the duration of the conference as some of the hotels were closer to city center. We have really enjoyed using the trains, trolleys, and busses which allowed us to see more than if we walked everywhere and we didn't need to rent a car. Their system is very efficient and you don't have to wait long for the next vehicle to show up.
I only took one ride on the MAX and I want to be upfront about that- from the airport to downtown. My hotel was off of the red line, so I didn't need to change trains. The train happened to be waiting at the airport when I got to the ticket booth, and stayed there for maybe 8 minutes. The ticket booths were intuitive- $2.50 for a one way and $5.00 for an all day pass. So that ride itself was good. It got very crowded, but I'm from the NYC area so that's nothing to complain about. However, the train itself did not really go where I wanted it to. Every place I looked to go ended up requiring the bus instead. After an uncomfortable experience walking the streets of Old Town, I no longer felt comfortable walking everywhere in Portland. The MAX stops often had people asking for money or camping out, which is not a problem but made things less comfortable. Overall, the train did one great job for me, but was limited. If it fits your needs, go for it.
While we had a free app on my phone to tell me how to get around, you almost did not need it as there was information at every station as to where the train was going and when it would be there. In addition, the people of Portland are very friendly and helpful about giving advice on how to get around on the trains.
Who needs a car in Portland? The MAX light rail is great! My husband and I rode from the airport to downtown - as "honored" citizens, it only cost us $1.25 each. It was easy to find the ticket machines just outside baggage at the airport (watch for overhead signs for MAX). Instructions were clear, trains were clean and fast and on time. So easy and better than a taxi!
If you are an "honored" citizen (senior) you can ride all day for $2.50, and the MAX has so many routes and stops, is clean and fast.
This is two way to purchase ticket 2 dollar 50 for 2 and half hour or 5 dollar for whole day.
If you need more than one stop 5 dollar is way to go.
Just ask driver for direction since so many share same track it easily confuse you and end up wrong place.
