Okay, who needs a car in Portland? No one. The MAX transit system is all over, very cheap, clean and fast. The ride in from the airport is $2.50 for adults, $1.25 for Honored Citizens (seniors). Your ticket is good for two hours, I think. Follow signs or just ask on the lower level of the airport, buy your ticket from the machine (credit or cash) and go outside for the Red Line. The ride is faster than you could drive in a car. Grab a map for info in the other lines. red, green, blue, purple....
Max offers great transportation throughout Portland. I personally would only use this service in the day time. There are sketchy people riding and begging. I have been approached numerous times by people asking for money and using extreme foul language.
For $5.00 you can have a day pass and get on and off as you wish all of them. Fun to just get on and ride the circle just to see Portland and what they have to offer. Great way to get to the go to places and not have to find parking.
On one hand Trimet MAX has its benefits. The all-day pass of $5 for Trimet MAX easily obtained at any Trimet MAX station or even via the Trimet website includes all day ridership privileges on Trimet buses and Trimet WES - a great value for money for tourists. I get to ride Trimet MAX about once a quarter/season a year.
But I get almost if not daily e-mails of Trimet MAX service disruptions - and even on one of my trips saw an "Out of Service" MAX. Also sometimes the trains are not as clean as they should be - and have very hard seats. Plus finally Trimet MAX security issues are growing.
So buyer beware... and enjoy the photos from multiple MAX visits.
Inexpensive, clean and fast. By far the best way to get around Portland. Especially from the airport to downtown.
We were impressed with the transportation system, using the train from our hotel to and from downtown, Washington Park, and the airport. It's not particularly fast, with lots of stops downtown, but there's much to see and it's clean and comfortable. Definitely a recommended mode of transportation!
