We just finished a marvelous meal at Kacha, which was Willamette Week's top restaurant of 2014, a well deserved choice. You will not find this food at home. Waitstaff are quite helpful navigating the unfamiliar but not weird menu items. A very comfortable place with nearby on street parking. Reservations are a must. Delicious food and drink! We especially loved the bread and the cabbage rolls, also the rye vodka cocktail.

Kachka is a Russian restaurant. The menu includes an amazing borscht, fabulous dumplings with farmer cheese and another with pork. We ate delicious black bread and a layered dip with herring. Expect the unusual and you will enjoy it. Reservations a must for the weekend. It is very noisy.

The accolades are well-deserved, this was one of the bets meals I had in 2014. They have local purveyors make specialty flavored vodkas, ask what they have in rotation. Definitely do a vodka tasting to start the meal. The atmosphere is festive and the food is out of this world. You can't go wrong with the main course selections, but I suggest you start the meal off by sharing selections from the fish board (the mackerel was my favorite), short rib borsch, one of the dumplings and the real standout, “herring under a fur coat” which is a 7-layer dip of deliciousness.

Kachka is a very appealing addition to the already broad array of ethnic restaurant options here in Portland, carving out a special niche for those pining away for as much zakuski and vodka as they can get their hands on. Fortunately taking a page from other ethnic restaurants in this city, the proprietors give those herbivores amongst us multiple options, something you probably wouldn't find at Russian restaurants in many other big cities.
We started with the pepper pkhali, which was flavorful, but only served to whet our appetites for what was to come: we also had the sheep's cheese brindza pashtet, the wonderfully textured mushrooms julienne, and two versions of the vareniki (dumplings - basically Russian ravioli) - the tvorog version (scallions and farmer’s cheese), and the even tastier sour cherry version. One entree is available in vegetarian disguise, namely a mushroom stroganoff, which was thankfully not swimming in sauce, allowing the various flavors more room to breathe. There are a couple of other vegetarian appetizer options we did not try, and for those vegetarians that will eat caviar, several choices there too.
The drinks include 14 different Russian vodkas (some of these are unfortunately fairly standard fare like Smirnoff and Stoli) and another 40 or so from around the world (including from Japan and Kazakhstan), but you might prime the pump with an aperitif first: the Jewish Rye is highly recommended. The beer selection could be improved (only the Obolon - Ukrainian - is available from that part of the world off a tap), especially given the imperative that this is a beer swilling town, but perhaps the demons at Kachka are trying to expand our horizons?
Overall an excellent experience with friendly, attentive wait staff, and a setting that evokes a nostalgia for the glorious drudgery of the Cold War and the much-trumpeted Dawn of Humanity - to top it all off, people watching provides the entertainment. To both the owners and the down-trodden masses (employees) that work at Kachka I offer a heartfelt "спасибо (spasibo)." We will definitely be back.
