“The Chowder was a disappointment, rest good”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2014

The restaurant is located in an alley-way, with tables set outside to dine when the sun is out. We were up for some of their famous fresh clam chowder, so we both ordered it. We split a Caesar salad and ordered a couple of drinks.

They first brought out some fresh baked hard rolls ... and they were DELICIOUS !! (we asked for more) then came out the Caesar salad and it was very flavorful and crisp. However, we were disappointed with the chowder.... the main dish we were waiting for. There were plenty of clams in it, but it was fishy and a little salty (like old clams?). We considered sending it back.

The service was very good by a young energetic waitress who catered to our every need. The price was reasonable, about $30 for our meal, drinks and tip ... and the atmosphere is cozy for a couple (likely not good for a family). Perhaps it was a bad day for the chowder, we'll try again once we're back in Portland.

“Skip this place”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 17, 2014

A local icon but food and service were so so. We at e in the bar area (mid afternoon) by the window, which was nice. Felt as if we were a bother to the waitress. Had a fried oyster small plate (good) and mussels (completely tasteless). Oysters on the half shell were $35 a dozen, which I thought was pricey. Maybe oysters aren't in season in May (?) there are other better places to eat in Portland.

“small place with great food and good service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2014

We had a good time here and the service was not only fast and efficient but helpful as well in what to order and suggestions and all that.Staff smiled and were warm and agreeable to our table.Had oysters, chowders, beers, teas, entrees, all of our party enjoyed coming here and we would definitely come here again for certain. The meal was tasty and served quick, portion sizes were "fair" not large, yes the prices were on the higher end due to it being seafood of course, but as well it is in a touristy area with hotels nearby.Bathroom is cramped and is showing its age but the place is physically old and this restaurant has been in the same family of ownership five generations now.Bar area is very much a nice (yet small) good place for an evening late night drink or snack. As well you could sit outdoors if you chose to.

“Freshest oysters in Portland”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2014

My wife and I dined at Dan and Louis Oyster Bar last night. We had frequented the place in the '70's and early '80's and we were anxious to revisit the place during a trip to Portland. The place really hasn't changed in 30 years, it's in the same location and has the same feel as it did all those years ago. Best of all, the food hasn't changed. The oysters were amazing and the service was great. My only complaint is that they wouldn't serve a cup of oyster stew, insisting that it could only be served in a bowl.

“Best Clam Chowder ever”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 23, 2014 via mobile

Been famous oysters here for decades...(the place for oysters in Portland). Ate the clam chowder here for the first time ever...the best all-time chowder...nothing short of miraculous. Needed more clams, so got order of steamed clams-also delicious. No wonder...they've been doing this for over 100 years. Staff is wonderful, too! Great bar. Romantic. Location downtown. Got it all!
