“Thought We'd Try a Local Icon”
Reviewed February 5, 2014

This was our first time to Dan and Louis and I'm sorry to say this place was a disappointment. First of all, it was cold in the "main" dining room (we found out later that the heat wasn't working and hasn't been working for awhile), second we had to go looking for a waitress to take our order even though the place was nearly empty, third we were asked if we wanted to have some bread and when it came, we were each given one piece of bread on a plate with a cube of butter. Really? One piece of bread? When dinner came, the mashed potatoes were warm, not hot and half of it was inedible because of the pickled cucumber and onion vegetable side that they placed directly on the plate with the entree and starch. If you are going to serve a pickled side dish instead of a fresh vegetable, at least put it in a small bowl so the vinegar brine doesn't get into the rest of the food.

The old time ship decor needs to be updated, the decorative plates on the wall need to be cleaned and while our waitress was nice, she needs to be taught how to wait tables. We heard her apologize to every table she had numerous times for some problem or other.

On the plus side, the chowder was tasty and served with real oyster crackers and my husband's salmon was cooked perfectly.

With all the fabulous restaurants in downtown Portland, Dan and Louis is going to have to up their game on every level if they want to stay in business for another 100 years.

“Good flavors, but just didn't meet expectations”
Reviewed February 2, 2014

After some Voodoo Doughnuts, this placed looked really inviting for the exterior. The inside is awesome as well. The food was very flavorful. However! The service was slow, even though it was early and the restaurant was nearly empty. The portions were small as well. The sandwiches we got were nearly half the size that I would expect from any restaurant. And the presentation was lacking to say the least. If we hadn't eaten before hand, we wouldn't have left full.

“Oyster Bar and Magic Show and Tasting Unplugged”
Reviewed January 26, 2014

The overpriced oysters were great. But $23 for three overdone quarter sized scallops on top of two potato pancakes???? Fantastically entertaining roving magician that may have accounted for the slow - not poor - service. On the way out, we checked out the booze and wine tasting going on - seemed like we were walking through a farmer's market. Where were the juggling jesters? It's been along time since we were here last. We will make this the last time.

“Sure, the chef was new...”
Reviewed January 25, 2014

My East Coast cousin was craving oysters, and Yelp gave this place pretty good reviews. It's located at the epicenter of homeless service providers, so the area was chock full of homeless people. It didn't bother us, but one has to wonder how many potential guests might be intimidated by that before they'd even get to the door. It's a large restaurant with a number of different rooms, and it was not crowded at all. We sat by the bar and ordered our food from a pleasant waitress. We got the salads first and they were fine. After waiting a long time, we received our entrees. The shrimp entrees had partially frozen shrimp in them. My plate was lukewarm. This was not attentive cooking at all! I asked my foodie companions, "What do foodies do when encountering this type of ill prepared food? Maybe we should just leave." That's what we did. The waitress offered to take the food back to get it cooked, but we paid and left. She said that the cook was new and in training! This was not a good experience, sorry to say.

“Best Oysters in Portland”
Reviewed December 30, 2013

My wife and I go to Dan's at least 6 times a year for the last 8 years or more. If you like fresh oysters, this is the place - especially during their Happy Hour. We are hooked to oysters and they have many different types changing with the months and where the best oysters are raised. The get them mostly from Washington, but also from BC and Oregon (sometimes). Best in the west! In the summer months there is outdoor seating. The place is a Portland institution.
