“The Original”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 25, 2014

When you visit Portland, you really must do Jake's. They have been doing this thing at Jake's for 100 years. The white uniformed service staff set the tone. the old wood and gaslight inspired lighting holds the mood, and, like in many Portland restaurants, they treat food like the French try to. Excellent fish, conservative menu, but a few different choices to satisfy the 'hard to please' guest.
It is always a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

“Iconic, but fading”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 25, 2014

Jake's is owned by the McCormick and Schmick's conglomerate.

I have been coming here once or twice a year for the last ten years, usually for special occasions or when friends and family come in from out of town. It is still iconic with memorabilia on the walls, fabulous paintings of Mt. Hood and faded photos of Portland. Jake's seems to be fading, too.

We came for our anniversary on July 30th, 2014. Our waiter, Rod or Ron was perhaps the most unenthusiastic waiter I had ever encounter outside a college or biker bar. When I go out to eat, I don't mind spending money, but the tip and the money for the food should reflect quality, service and friendliness. On this particular night, I felt Jake's missed on all three. Waitstaff was quick to water and get drinks, and then we waited, . . . and waited, and waited. We ordered our appetizers and waited, . . . and waited, . . . and then we ordered our entrees and waited, . . . . and waited. My wife had the bouillabaisse, which we have ordered before. Last time it was fat with seafood, so much she could finish it. It even had a stone crab claw. This time it had a couple of clams, one or two mussels, two U-12 prawns, and a couple of Langostines and some bay scallops. Bay scallops? Huh? My halibut was overcooked and dry.

The only shining moment of the whole evening was desert when we ordered creme brulee and the waiter put a candle in it. Bet that took a lot of energy and forethought.

If you are entertaining guest from outside the Pacific Northwest, go to Jake's. But there are far better seafood restaurants in Portland, Oregon.

“Top notch seafood, great ambience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 24, 2014

I have eaten here several times over the years, and have always found the food to be very good. This time, it was great, the proverbial home run. The sockeye salmon was cooked perfectly, and the platter of clams was a wonderful start. My friend also had salmon (Pacific), and was blown away by it. We were too full for dessert, but I can speak highly of the berry cobbler with vanilla bean ice cream, from previous experience. Although the restaurant was at maximum capacity, we were able to maintain a conversation at a comfortable level through the entire meal.Reservations are pretty much essential.

“Enjoyed it, but food could have been better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2014

Good reception, atmosphere (a pleasant buzz) and decor. Image of an old-time local favorite. My booth seat was uncomfortably hard. Service was very attentive. My sole was simply but well prepared, good quantity and good veggies and salad. My partner was not so happy with her catfish - we should stick to having that in the South. Desserts were overly large. But would consider going back if in Portland again.

“Best Mussels Ever!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2014 via mobile

Three out-of-town friends went to Jakes for the first time on a recommendation by a local. What a delight. Right upon entering we knew this was going to be a great dining experience.
We had a nice bottle of Oregon wine to start, then accompanied it with our appetizer selections. Mussels. We couldn't decide if we wanted the mussels in wine and butter sauce, or puttanesca sauce, so we ordered one bowl of each. OMG! Those were the fattest, tastiest, most delicious ones any of us have ever eaten. We even asked for more bread to soak up the puttanesca sauce. We really could have made a meal of those alone, and will on our next visit.
The entrees arrived hot, and delicious. We took a good portion of our entrees home. We had filled up on those mussels.
This is a special occasion place. Save your visit for a celebration of some kind, because it really is restaurant for times when you want the very best atmosphere, service, and most importantly, food.
