Cozy tables high and low, firelight, candles, dark woods and great food.....an environment that epitomizes the Portland restaurant scene.terrific happy hour that presents a chance to try some of the best offerings for a fraction of the regular prices.

I have accompanied friend to happy haou several times and have not enjoyed any of the items I selected. The good news, they have great desserts.

The happy hour circuit in Portland, OR is one of a kind. And in the trendy but oh so comfortable Alphabet District in the 23rd Street area, Cafe Nell is tucked away in a beautiful treed section. Small, close yet friendly, the menu is ample, tasty and no corners are cut by the kitchen. A very tiny Parisian bar accents the entrance with tall tables and a nice overstuffed chair area adjacent. Tall windows swing open to bring the street-scape inside.

$2 Drop Top beer, $5 wines and some tasty champagne cocktails create a broad drink menu.

Raw oysters @ $1 per, a great black bean soup, a spaghetti bolognese that my wife just loved, and okay chicken tacos fit the bill for $39 w/o tip. Enough of a meal to constitute "supper."

Happy Hour Guidebook gives it a 9 with a star. I can go with this primarily because they offer HH from 4 pm to close on Saturday...most don't but I imagine it is very crowded which could be a problem.

Started our meal with mac and cheese (awesome and huge!), and though we didn't have much room left for dinner, we made sure to finish all of our entrees too. Great and comfortable sidewalk seating! Wish we could have gone here again.

We visit Portland once a year, and for the last three years we go to Cafe Nell at least twice each visit. It has indoor/outdoor seating, great food (Chicken Paillard for lunch), great Happy Hour drinks and small plates, and wonderful service. Sit at the bar - the bartenders are all very friendly!
