Our first morning in Portland, we went to the Byways Cafe based on TA reviews. We walked in and were seated right away. Our server was friendly, I think his name was Chip. The place had a warm neighborhood feeling and I could see how this place would be someone's regular breakfast and or lunch spot. It's decorated with vintage decorative state plates and old license plates. We both had egg dishes which were very yummy and filing. I ordered the biscuit instead of toast and it was amazing! It's located in the area called The Pearl....and this is a gem.

We just happened upon Byways Cafe when searching for a breakfast spot on our last morning in Portland. What a great find!! Everything was extremely fresh, the coffee was excellent, they had gluten free bread for gluten free me and the service was quick and very friendly. This is a must for a quick, delicious breakfast.

We waited about 15 minutes to get a table on a Saturday morning (not a big deal) but then once we ordered it took over 40 minutes to get our food. Once we got our food, it was hit or miss. The oj (fresh squeezed) was great and the coffee so so. The home fried potatoes and toast were good but the omelettes were not great (one had too much cheese and one had barely any). Anyway, we were there about an hour and a half so this was not a quick breakfast and was not worth the wait for us.

Just wait to be seated. It's busy with locals and others but sure worth the waiting. Had an omelette and pancakes, superb quality. Great staff. Very kind. Hidden treasure. Will be back soon!

This diner was recommended by someone on the street, and we decided to take the advice. We were there for a late lunch and so we were the last ones to leave. This is a small place, but we were quickly offered a booth by one of the friendly waiters. The menu is mainly burgers and sandwiches. They come with your choice of a side. One odd slip up was my wife was not asked what she wanted as a side and ended up with potato salad which was not her choice. The sandwiches were huge and we had plenty to eat. My daughter had fries which were crisp and not greasy. This is a great find and we would return if we were back in Portland.
