The Bijou Cafe has been a favorite breakfast place in Portland for decades and for good reason. If breakfast is the most important meal of the day then this is the type place that has helped make it so. The menu is varied enough to appeal to a wide variety of tastes including vegetarian, seafood and meat options. Sausage and ham from Olympia Provisions are featured in several dishes and well worth considering.

We chose roast beef hash with eggs and biscuit with gravy and eggs. The roast beef came in large chunks with equally large chunks of potatoes and sweet caramelized onions. The eggs on top were perfectly cooked to order. Mother would have approved. The biscuit was huge, fluffy and rather than a milk gravy, featured meat based gravy that included slices of link sausage. Thin slices of ham adorned the biscuit and added sweetness. Again, the eggs were perfectly cooked to order.

Our table service was outstanding and the coffee cup was kept constantly filled. There is ample reason that the Bijou Cafe has endured.

We were so looking forward to coming here as we'd read about their 'French style omelettes. However, on arrival the 'hostess' was grumpy, did not return our smiles and when we asked if we could have coffee while we waited for a table she told us to go to Stumptown, next door (we should have). We at around 9:15 am and there were several tables available but we were told that they were expecting a table for 18 so we had to wait. We ordered Oyster Omelette fresh oyster, bacon & onion 14.75, Oyster Hash fresh oysters dredged in cornmeal flour, sauteed with onion & potatoes 14.95, plus 2 sunny side up eggs, 2 coffees & 2 orange/grapefruit juices. Unfortunately all the EGGS were overcooked, has had far too much potato and the potatoes served with the omelette had no seasoning, the waitress dumped the food at our table and ran off to set up for the large group, which was expected. We would have sent the eggs back if the waitress had returned - but when she did our meal was nearly over and when we said the eggs were over cooked, she said 'were they really?'. The final kicker was the breakfast bill was $60+ with a tip... we will not be returning!

On a recent trip to Portland, we had breakfast one morning and were blown away. Wonderful food and atmosphere. Next morning after much deliberation, we just had to return forgoing all the other choices in the area. I had the Special German Apple pancake... So good. Service was very good and friendly. Even took time to give us some tourist tips as we headed east to explore the Columbia River Gorge.

You have lots of choices for meals in Portland so let this be one of them.
I went on a busy Friday morning but the wait was only a few minutes.
I had the dish with eggs, cauliflower, kale, etc (forgot what it was called) and my friends had a omelet and the fried chicken over pancakes. All our meals were really good. But it was our waitress that made it memorable (I can't recall her name now but she was wearing a leather apron with a utility knife on the belt). We were first time visitors to Portland and she chatted a lot with us about things to do, interesting sights, general interesting life discussions. And we had an active baby with us that she also charmed. I'll go back next time I'm in Portland.
