We enjoyed browsing the many menu choices, most of which we'd seldom encountered on a Middle Eastern menu before. All the appetizers on others' plates looked wonderful. Our kibbeh and sambousak hot appetizers were fantastic. The house salad tasted good. We thought the makloube or "upside down" casserole of lamb stew need more flavor--perhaps some herbs introduced into the mix. We didn't try dessert, but they looked yummy.

The restaurant is located in a quaint neighborhood in the greater Portland metro area. It is not close to any major highways. The place is very popular and fills quite rapidly. We asked if the took reservations and they replied no, but advised we arrive before six pm as they were usually filled to capacity by that time. We arrived at 50:20 and people were arriving in droves. The place was filled by 6pm. The service was very good, the food was hot and cold. My dish was very good, but others in my party complained the food was bland. Bland lamb shank is not a good thing. The clientel were colorful and the burka clad patrons added to the atmosphere. All in all it was a good experience.

We frequently visit Portland and always have at least one meal at Ya Hala. This has been going on for ten years and on each visit, the food is always made on site with fresh ingredients. The menu is extensive and so reasonably priced. Service is generally very good, but be patient if you get there when it's very busy. Ya Hala has become very popular over the years so be prepared for a wait if you get there after 6:00 but the wait is definitely worth it and usually not too long. We try to get there before 5:00 and always have immediate seating.

I have eaten at four or five Portland Lebanese restaurants in the past, and in my mind, Ya Hala is the best. Six of us dined there on a Saturday evening. While the restaurant is both popular and busy, it is quite large, and we were seated without a wait. Our party ordered a variety of appetizers, all of which were tasty, and a combination dish which was listed on the menu for 4-5 people. Those who eat at Lebanese restaurants know that portions are huge and order modestly. Our waiter, Ravi, was very professional and very helpful. The wines were good and the desserts were outstanding. Pricing is modest.

Homemade every thing, we have been enjoying the wonderful food here for about three years now, every meal has been amazing. Hands down the freshest Lebanese food we know about, even our boat mechanic (who is a meat and potatoes kind of guy) has gotten hooked on the food. Can't wait to go back, need my baklava fix. Cheers
