I lived in the Middle East for a year and had a chance to travel around at other times too. The food at Nicholas Restaurant was like being back there.

The menu offers many choices for Mediterranean and Middle Eastern (meat, vegetarian, or vegan) cuisines at a very reasonable price. The portions of the dinner is usually for two people. When you first arrive at the restaurant, Nicholas' Restaurant will serve complimentary their signature large pita. A person can easily spoil his/her dinner from this pita. Once you order your dinner, it arrives to your table very quickly. I saw this restaurant with a high ranking on Tripadvisor and the restaurant deserves it!

I was visiting Portland and a friend of mine took me here for a quick bite to eat. So glad they did.
Incredible food - and LOTS of it for a small price of usually $13 bucks or under.
Plus, it comes with a huge amount of bread that is freshly baked right there for you, and just an overall fantastic experience.
True, it's a small place. You're bumping into people to get by them so you can be seating at a small table. But, by the time you get the food, you could care less. Everyone else is enjoying themselves, grubbing out and happy to be enjoying excellent food.
From what I understand a line does form at night because its so popular - but again, its a small place so it gets full quickly - I would think it could handle about 40-50 people max at one time.

Nicholas restaurant gets your attention when they bring a hot and bubbling 14 inch diameter pita bread out to your table. It sits on a special platform on your table and it instantly becomes the center of attention. The mezza platters are huge so expect to take home some left-overs. I have found the gyro and shwarma sandwiches to be tasty and a good value at lunch time. For me, lamb is the litmus test of the quality of a Greek or Lebanese restaurant. In my opinion, Nicholas falls short in this category with tough and not properly marinated meat.

This restaurant is crowded and noisy. There is often a line of people waiting to get in at dinner time and you can expect to be sitting approximately 24 inches away from the stranger next to you. If you look up, expect to see a jungle of painted and exposed 2x4's in the ceiling. The neighborhood just south of Burnside is a little funky at night so I would not come her alone.

Definitely not a place for a romantic dinner unless you are both into carbo loading.

This is the most famous Lebanese restaurant in the city and for a good reason. The food has always been tasty, good but modest presentation and the prices about average.
