Description: Tasty n Alder, a John Gorham restaurant in Downtown Portland, Oregon, is a modern steakhouse featuring a fun, family-style menu of innovative dishes with diverse international origins. The dinner menu is rooted in the traditional steakhouse concept featuring meats, seafood and salad served in a festive, energetic environment that encourages shared plates and imbibing. Tasty n Alder’s brunch menu is inspired by Chef Gorham’s travels and experiences with the vital immigrant community working in the restaurant industry whose own cultural traditions have helped re-shape American cuisine as a global collaboration of flavors.

I have to say that This restaurant had the best Bi Bim Bop I have ever had. I have had many different ones at various Korean restaurants but I was surprised that this mainly American Cuisine restaurant had such an amazing Korean dish. The rice was perfectly crispy in its stone pot, and the taste was perfectly sweet and spicy without being overwhelming. I loved the BBQ Korean pork they used in this dish as well.

We arrived at 6:00 on a Tuesday and there was a 45 min wait for a table. There is counter seating at the bar and around the cooking area. We were seated at the latter, which would have been fine but for the fact that it was hot by the cooking area and. 90 degrees outside. But it was fine. The service was prompt. The decor is cool. Exposed duct work on the ceiling and lots of reclaimed wood and steel surfaces. Lots of animated chatter in the room. Two if us shared four small plates which was ample for dinner. The short ribs were amazing-- not the typical rib in sauce. The were thinly sled across the bone a seasoned and grilled perfectly. Yum. Also highly recommend the goat cheese dumplings and green beans. $75 got. 4 dishes and 2 glasses of wine. I thought it was good value for excellent food and a hip place.

We arrived on a Warm, Friday evening at 6:30. There would be a 45 min wait. We only waited 20 minutes to be served. We were seated outside and happy about it as it was so loud inside that conversation would be difficult. The food was good, but the finer elements of the experience were missing. They seemed short staffed. Our drink order was taken, and despite the fact that we could have used some coaching with the menu, our waitress did not visit us again for the 15 minutes I took for our drinks to arrive. In that time, we might have ordered and received an app, or at least placed an order. We ordered a bit too much, but some highlights were the radicchio salad and the short ribs. We could have done without the goat cheese dumpling. We may be back again. If not for the great food, Tasty n Alder might have earned a three for the service.
